How to Create an Anticipation Guide

*Keep it Simple!

*Write four to six statements about key ideas in the text

*some statements should be true and some false

*Include columns following each statement, labeled Yes or No/ True or False

*For younger students you may want use a smiley/sad face or

thumbs up/down instead

*You may wish to create an additional column for revisiting the guide after reading

How to Use an Anticipation Guide

1. Introduce the text to the students

2. Share the guide with the students
3. Model the process of responding to the statements and marking the columns
4. Read each of the statements and ask the students if they agree or disagree
with it
5. Provide the opportunity for discussion (Have students share what they know
and make predictions)
6. Read the text aloud or have students individually (If reading aloud, read
slowly and stop periodically at places in the text that correspond to
statements on the guide)
7. After reading revisit each of the statements
