• “No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the US, as
defined in section 706(8) of this title, shall, solely by reason of
her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be
denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under
any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance…”
• “An individual with a disability means any person who: i) has a
mental or physical impairment that substantially limits one or
more major life activity; ii) has a record of such an impairment; or
(iii) is regarded as having such an impairment.”

EMOTIONAL CONCERNS
• Concerns we often see:
– Stress, adjustment issues, homesickness, relationship issues,
self-esteem issues, conflict with others, typical adolescent identity
exploration, depression, anxiety, self-injury, suicidal ideation
– Students who are considered to be a possible danger to
themselves or others are either taken to the emergency room or
sent home for an assessment, depending on the circumstances

WHAT PARENTS CAN DO

• Please notify us of prior issues of which we should be aware!


Information will be kept confidential.
• Please complete the online counseling permission form.
• Understand dynamics of the counseling relationship.
• Notify us anytime you notice changes that concern you.

MEDICAL CONCERNS

MEDICAL CONCERNS
•Students should notify Student Life Advisor (“SLA”) or staff
member at the desk if they are ill.
•The nurse cannot excuse classes after-the-fact.
•SLAs are trained to respond to medical concerns and administer
medication.
•The nurse is on call when students are present.
•Nurse’s hours and building rounds
•Doctor’s appointments and ER visits
HOMESICKNESS –
WHAT WE WILL DO
• Peers can be good resources for students who are homesick and
we’re more than happy to pair your student up with a buddy.
• We will meet with students who are struggling and try to
encourage and help students to get more involved.
• We offer some “homesickness groups” early in the year, which
can be very helpful. It’s nice to know you aren’t alone.

• Be enthusiastic. Avoid negative statements or mixed messages.
• Talk about coping strategies and campus resources.
• Don’t try to “home it away” and avoid the pick-up-deal.
• Try not to call or visit too often.
• Do send care packages!
