Short Paper #3

Philosophical Foundations

Often times, we go into a battle with our weapons sharpened and ready to strike. Other
times, we go barefooted and naked. But either ways, we remain brave. Why? Maybe because we
have this permanent and unchanging oath or mantra engraved in our heads and hearts of the
reasons why we are battling in the first place.

I want it this way. I want it that way. These perfectly go together. This still needs
polishing. We definitely need this! No, this is not beneficial in any way at all. We are always
faced with unlimited options, to do or not do something. We may have doubts lingering and
whispering thoughts and ideas which makes us shaky, but through it all we remain firm on the
grounds of our belief.

I see myself as an idealist before, but as I get to stay long in the service, I became more of
a realist. In my experience, the theory which I am more inclined to follow inside my classroom is
Behaviorism and Progressivism. Since I am an adviser of the last section in grade 7. I tend to
focus not only with their cognitive development, but also their behavioral development. As far as
I would want them to be as knowledgeable as those who belong to the higher sections, little
changes in their behavior towards their studies is what truly matters to me. I also practice reward
system inside my classroom. They get a point every time they do well on tests, as well as they do
every classroom duties they have. At the end of every quarter, I tend to give them simple tokens
for their hard work or merely just by trying at all. I also encourage them to join different school
activities, I always find time to get to know them and provide them with opportunities which
would develop their potentials.

The biggest challenge for me before was adjusting the difficulty of my every lesson,
considering I was used to teaching students from the urban community – all well-read and well-
versed. Now, what I’ve realized is that if I did not adjust or made my lessons intentional to cater
to their needs – the biggest challenge would have been unfathomable.
