Learning Record Form For Research ONLY Name: Changkid Pratumma

The purpose of this form is to document your learning as you are researching.
What you should see is that learning is a process. Your goal should be to update this form on a daily basis as you work and find out additional information:

 Include the information you have learned, with the main ideas summarized in your own words. If you can’t summarize it in your own words, you haven’t learned it.
 Include the dates so that you can monitor your learning process.
 As you learn more, you should always have more questions. We should see continuous questions and answers as you seek to deepen your knowledge.

Knowledge Section: This section will be where you record what you know. At the end it should give us a picture of the starting point.

 Things you know and things you learned: This section will be the first section you will fill out. Here you will list, summarized in your own words, every important
idea that you know so far. Choose a specific color for all the things that you know. This should be summarized in your own words.

“Things you don’t know” Section:

 Things you know that you don’t know: List questions or statements you need to learn to complete the research proposal. These should be questions that come from
you. Having focused questions or goal is an important part of doing efficient research.
 If the teacher comes to ask you what you are doing, you should be able to show them the question you are focused on. As you learn new information, add it to the
‘things you know section’ in a different color.
 Questions ‘drive’ learning. Asking effective questions is the key to real learning. You should keep a careful record of all questions that come to your mind.
If the teacher comes to ask what you are doing, you should be able to show them the question that is driving your learning

Learning Section: This section will be where you record as what you learn. At the end it should give us a picture of the learning that took place during this project.

 Things you learned: This section will be filed out throughout the project. Here you will list, summarized in your own words, every important idea that you have
learned so far. As you learn more, you should add to this list. This should be summarized in your own words. Add dates to when the knowledge was added to the
project. Keep a list of sources as you learn.

Cause of deforestation
Deforestation: the permanent destruction of forests in order to utilize the land or trees. Clearing trees without planting the new trees for the future growth.
Cause of deforestation
- The major cause of deforestation is agriculture plantation.
- There are 6 causes of deforestation
Mining:
- Huger project such as road because there are more cars
- The increase of mining on tropical rainforest
Paper
- The current world’s paper production is 400 million tons per year which need 640 million trees.
Overpopulation
- Cutting down forest to have more land for housing and settlement.
Logging
- Heating and cooking need logs.
Agriculture Expansion & Livestock Ranching
- Increase in demand of fruits and vegetable causing more land using for agriculture.
Climate change
- Causing humid or no rain and water in some season. Plant cannot survive.
Human make up 6% to 17% of deforestation.

14/05/2019
Effects of deforestation
There are at least 17 effects from deforestation.
There are good effects from deforestation:
- More food because more land to grow crops.
- Provide more jobs for people
The bad effects from deforestation:
- Given more Carbon dioxide and less oxygen
- It is causing more drought
- It causes flooding
- Causing extinction to wildlife.
- Causing soil erosion
Brazil is the country that got affected by deforestation the most because people are cutting down lots of trees from Amazon.

Ways to reduce
There are eight ways to reduce deforestation.
1. Plant more trees
2. Use less paper at home and office where you work.
3. Recycled product or buy the recycled product
4. Buy certified (FSC with marked) wood products.
5. Support products of company who are trying to reduce deforestation.
6. Buy only what you will use.
7. Don’t use product of palm oil.
8. Raise awareness to everyone in your society.
The most effective ways to reduce deforestation is strong policies such as Lacey Act to close the market for illegally sourced wood.

Evidence of effect from deforestation

- About 7,900 square kilometers of Amazon forest was cleared in Brazil between August 2017 and July 2018.
- 13.7 percentages of deforestation in Amazon increased each year.
- 28% of endangered species of animals in Amazon.

Laws created for deforestation
- U.S. Lacey Act, the EU Timber Regulation, and the Australian Illegal Logging Prohibition Act in major consumer laws related to illegal logging and associated
trade that include the plant.
- United states created law in 1900 for banning illegal wildlife trading.
- Australia introduced its Illegal Logging Prohibition Act in 2012 to ban illegal wood products.
- The EU Timber Regulation was created and approved in 2010 by the European Parliament and Council. They started to force this more on March 3, 2013 for
illegally sourced of wood products on European market.
- Lacey Act, EU Timber Regulation, and CITES work to reduce demand of illegal and unsustainable timber.
- The EU developed a plan on Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) which advocates development of VPAs or Voluntary Partnership
Agreements with timber-producing countries.
- CITES is law that used world wide.

Effects of deforestation on nutrient cycle
Phosphorus cycle
- Phosphorus cycle is greatly affected by deforestation.
- People are mostly cause deforestation to turn forest into farmland.
- Soil to lose nutrient and imbalance of phosphorus in an ecosystem.
Water cycle
- Nitrate from eroding soil which caused by deforestation will go into the river which affect the health of water.
- Nitrate can lead to death of some animal species that live under water.
- Causing more water than usual or flood because plant will mostly absorb water. When there are less plants, low amount of water can be absorbed and causing
flood.
Carbon cycle
- The rate of CO2 during 1800s is around 275-280 ppm.
- After that, it continuously rose.
- Reason: More people use fossil fuels for cars, factories or generate electricity. But there are less trees that absorb CO2 for photosynthesis. Therefore, the amount of
CO2 in the atmosphere is too much and more than plant’s need. This causing an effect to carbon cycle.
Nitrogen
- Decrease amount of organic nitrogen in deforestation area.
- The production of nitrate will be in a very low rate and may impact the growth of remaining trees
