Greensburg Salem Professional Reflection on Effective Teaching & Learning

Danielson Domain & Component: 3C Engaging Students in Learning

Description of Artifact: Notes from my Principal on a Walkthrough

Justification for proficient or distinguished rating within Domain & Component:

“Miss Weiner worked with students in a small group to brainstorm different ideas about
fall. Students discussed in a group and then tried to write about fall independently. Miss
Weiner prompted students to think about something they have seen that makes them know
that fall is here. Students shared that the leaves are a different color and are falling down
everywhere. Miss Weiner by allowing students to brainstorm as a group and then work
independently you are engaging students in their learning without having the pressure of
coming up with something on their own.”

Many of the students who I have the pleasure of working with need help “getting the ball
rolling” on assignments. This low-pressure writing prompt was used to gauge my students’
writing abilities (a pre-assessment). By captivating my students’ attention by discussing items
related to fall, Halloween, and other activities that peaked their interest, excitement for the
writing prompt grew, and the more motivated they were to complete the task.

Reflection on future growth within Domain & Component:

Peaking student interest in a topic or a lesson is integral in their active engagement. Using
anticipatory sets that are exciting and spark curiosity are what will help teachers to keep the
excitement lasting all lesson long. Teachers who are excited about teaching, teach students to
be excited about learning. It is my hope that I continue to light the spark of my students and
teach them to be life-long learners.
