Science with Mrs.

Giardina
May 2019

Third Grade: Students further investigate how traits are passed down from parents to offspring by building clay creature offspring
(using instructions from parent creatures), comparing and discussing similarities and variations between the offspring, and revisiting a
fruit fly family to discuss current ideas about inheritance. Students model their ideas about patterns of inheritance by using
the Inheritance and Traits Modeling Tool using the I-Pads. Next, students participate in the Word Relationships routine. They practice
using unit vocabulary as they discuss key ideas they’ve learned so far. Students are then introduced to the family trees for each of the
two wolf packs in Graystone National Park; the family trees include data that will enable students to begin to answer the Chapter 2
Question: Why is Wolf 44’s color similar to one pack but different from the other?

Fourth Grade: Students will continue to review concepts from science grades 1-4. They will be understanding food chains
and food webs in an ecosystem. They will also have hands-on work with force and motion. Finally, we will get to Earth
Science lessons that involve weather, erosion and deposition. These vocabulary words show how the Earth is always
changing.
