Prototype Testing

Procedure for sponge:


1. Assemble prototype (Cotton fiber sponge, PLA rings, nylon rope, attached to
miniature boats)
2. Fill baby pool 1/3 of the way with water; pour 2 cups of dyed vegetable oil into
the water
3. Place prototype in water
4. Pull boats around water for 2 minutes
5. Squeeze oil into measuring cup to measure the amount of oil soaked up by the
sponge
6. Repeat 3 times
Procedure for bacteria:
1. Pour 2 cups of water into disposable aluminum tin
2. Add 4 tbsp of motor oil
3. Add 2 tsp of bacteria clay
4. Measure amount of oil left after 10, 20, and 30 minutes

From these tests, we can determine if our prototype works!

Trial 1: 6 oz of oil (3/4 cup)


Trial 2: 8 oz of oil (1 cup)
Trial 3: 7 oz of oil (7/8 cup)

Bacteria Tests

The bacteria began to break down the oil, and broke it down even more when given a few
hours.
