EXAMINATION OF BEAM CLAMPS

1.0 Purpose

To define the procedural requirements for Examination of Beam clamps in accordance with
BS EN 13155:2003

To specify the internal procedures to certify of test and through examination of Beam Clamps

4.0 Responsibility

Assurance of Quality Inspection and correct acceptance level of Lifting Equipment by a

qualified Lifting Equipment Inspector

5.0 Procedure (Internal Documents)

5.1. General

Check identification and SWL is clearly marked on the Beam clamp. Then compare these
markings against the current certificate.
Examine test certificate for correct detailing, and calculate the load requirement for the
proof load test.
For proof load requirement : SWL x 2

5.2. Examination of Beam Clamp

Check all the moving parts against seizure, e.g: pivots, pins and load bar.
If swivel jaws are fitted, ensure that they are free to rotate.
Check the unit for operation and alignment of frame.
Check the Handle is free from burs, distortion and good for operation.
Examine the stress points for cracks, distortion, nicks, gauging and corrosion.
Examine the load bearing parts for signs for wear. Maximum permissible wear must not
exceed 8 % of bearing cross section.
Insecure locking arrangements including substitute nuts and bolts where used.

6.0 Acceptance Level

If any observations are found unsatisfactory, then the Beam clamp is met with the
non acceptance criteria.
