LIME MORTAR PREPARATION DOCUMENTATION

LIME
Lime is a calcium-containing inorganic mineral, used for building
construction in India since antiquity.
Buildings consructed with lime, that have survived natural ca-
lamities and continuous weathering for more than a millennium
throughout India are physical evidence of longitivity and durability
of traditional knowledge about the material.

LIME KILNS
There are large variations in the design of lime kilns across the country, depending
on the geographical location, types of limestone to be fired, availabile fuel and the
end use of fired product.
PROCEDURE

STAGE -1

Quick lime is converted to Slaked lime by hydration.

LIME MORTAR
STAGE -2
Lime Mortar is known for its durable, breathable and environment friedly nature.
Mixing slaked lime with aggregate and storing for minimum 15 days.
Lime Mortar = Lime as binding material + Aggregate as fillers that reduce shrinkage
+ Organic Additives for strengthening and improving properties STAGE -3

Mixing the stored mixture with natural additives in mixer before each use.
Bags of quick lime obtained from supplier from Quick Lime in the form of stone is sprinkled with
STAGE-1 Ariyalur water to obtain powdery white slaked lime.

> Material obtained from supplier is in the form of stones of Quick Lime (CaO).

> To make it powdered Slaked Lime ( Ca(OH)2), it needs to react with water.

> Powder have to be cleared from all impurities before next procedure.

Slaked Lime obtained is dried under sunlight.

STAGE-2

> The sieved Slaked Lime is mixed with aggregate in a tank.

> Slaked Lime and River Sand / M-Sand is mixed in the ratio of 1:2 in dry
condition Filling the tank with 10 bags of dried and sieved slaked lime and 20 bags of M-Sand

> Water is poured into the tank with mixed mixture every 2 days for damping
the mixture.

M- Sand
Dried Sieved Slaked Lime
Wet the mixture in tank with water every two days After minimum of 15 days of storage in tank and frequent dampening, the mixture can be
taken further to the next stage of processes.
STAGE-3

> Organic additives - 50kg of Jaggery and 50kg of Kadukka is mixed in half
bucket of water to form a liquid mixture. Jaggery

>The mixture of slaked lime and aggregate along with organic additives is
mixed in the pan.

>The final mixture after mixing everything together in the pan is the Lime mortar
for building use.
