CALCULATION OF CONDENSATE LOAD

a. Heating Time

The heating time is calculated for each level of steam pressure on the largest and

longest pipe diameter to achieve the saturated steam temperature from ambient

temperature during startup.

No Level Pressure Saturated Heating Time (hour)

(kg/cm2) Temperature (°C)
1 High Pressure 58.6 275 1.44
2 Medium Pressure 17.2 210 2.91
4 Low Pressure 3.5 148 3.15

𝑄𝑎𝑣 = 𝑚𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑚 𝑥 𝑐𝑝 𝑥 ( 𝑇2 − 𝑇1 ) + 𝑚𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑚 𝑥 𝐿𝑓

𝑄𝑟𝑒𝑞 = 𝑚𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑙 𝑥 𝑐𝑝 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑙 𝑥 ( 𝑇2 − 𝑇1 )

Where,

Qav = available heat (kJ/s)

msteam = mass of steam flow to Train F per second (kg/s)

msteel = mass of steel (kg)

Cp = specific heat of steam (kJ/kg-K)

Cp steel = specific heat of steel (kJ/kg-K)

T2 = saturated temperature of steam (K)

T1 = ambient temperature (K)

Lf = latent heat of steam (kJ/kg)

treq = time for steel to achieve steam saturated temperature (s)

The example calculation of time required for low pressure steam pipe (NPS 36

with the length of 40 m) to achieve the saturated temperature at low pressure

steam.

Item Value
msteam (kg/s) 77.7

Cp steel (kJ/kg-K) 0.49
T2 (K) 420
T1 (K) 299
Lf (kJ/kg) 2,147

𝑄𝑎𝑣 = 77.7 𝑥 2.37 𝑥 (420 − 299 ) + 77.7 𝑥 2,147 = 189,293 𝑘𝐽/𝑠

𝑄𝑟𝑒𝑞 = 36,162,826𝑥 0.49 𝑥 ( 420 − 299 ) = 2,144,093,961 𝑘𝐽
