Module 5: Pedagogy I – Complex Problem Solving

REFLECTION

The Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition (SAMR) Model is designed to help
educators integrate technology into teaching and learning methodologies. I strongly believe that ICT
enhances the teaching and learning process and as such I fully support and endorse its implementation as a
standard in the education system. Students in general perceive chemistry as a difficult subject. However I
think the use of ICT can enable educators in such fields to develop teaching strategies in a significantly
more inspiring, understandable and effective way.
In a substitution level of the SAMR Model, teachers or students are only using new technology tools to
replace old ones. For instance, in using Google Docs to replace Microsoft Word, the task of writing is the
same but the tools are different. On the surface, substitution tools do not appear to significantly shift the
nature of learning but digitally documenting a student’s inquiries through substitution tools makes learning
visible and provides formative feedback. At the augmentation level, technology still acts as a direct tool
substitute, but with functional improvements. Taking the example of typing on a word processor,
augmentation means that the learning process can become more efficient and engaging. Images can be
added, text can be hyperlinked and changes to the text itself can be made quickly. These first two stages of
the SAMR model represent enhancements of existing ways of working. Digital technology is not necessary
in order to carry out the learning task. The technology simply provides a digital medium for learning to take
place, which may enhance learning.
In the forthcoming academic year, I intend to make significant changes in the way I teach and assess
students. The impact of ICT is revolutionary and it has its place in the teaching and learning process. Its
potential for effectiveness and efficiency cannot be denied. My teaching practice will be improved to meet
modern standards from e-assessments to stimulating digital presentations and teacher/student website
where course materials are posted.
