Apparatus/Materials:
• Samples of Sodium chloride, magnesium chloride,
aluminium chloride, silicon tetrachloride, phosphorus
trichloride, and disulphur dichloride.
• Distilled water
• Universal indicator solution
• Test tubes
• Test tube rack
• Dropper
Procedure
1. Add an extremely small amount of NaCl to about 2 mL of
distilled water and shake thoroughly.
2. Add a drop of universal indicator to the solution obtained
and record the pH.
3. Repeat the above procedure for the other samples provided.
Reactions with PCl , SiCl and S Cl will be done by teacher.

Analysis:
1. Which of the chlorides of Period 3 dissolved in water?
2. Which of the chlorides of period 3 are hydrolysed in water?
Write equations for the reactions.
3. How does the pH of the solution of the chlorides change
across Period 3?
