Overview

What is Crushed Stone?

By definition, crushed stone is a construction aggregate. It is created by mining a
suitable rock formation and then breaking down the rock to varying sizes using a
crusher. Crushed stone differs from gravel in that gravel has a more rounded shape
and is made by the natural processes of weathering and erosion.

Crushed stone is one of the most common and accessible natural resources on the
planet. It is one of our most abundant and basic raw materials. The stone is used in
various industries from construction to agriculture.

Why use different grades?

Crushed stone is a versatile material used for many purposes. Those purposes range
from base material for pavers and bricks to dressing up areas for driving or walking.

Crushed stone grades are categorized by the size of the stone after it has been
crushed. The size of the stone determines what application it will be best used for.

Crushed Stone Grade #5
Best Uses for #5
Crushed Stone #5 is used in several
different instances including:
•  Septic drainage fields.
•  Top layer for driveways.
•  Roadways.
•  Filler material.
•  Railroad ballast.
•  May be required in portland cement.
What is Crushed Stone #5?
Crushed Stone #5 ranges from 1” to fine
particles. This grade of crushed stone is
used widely in construction applications,
but can also be highly decorative.
Because of the wide range of sizes of
crushed stone #5, it has many functions,
including drawing attention to vegetation
or accentuating water features.

Crushed Stone Grade #67
Best Uses for #67
Crushed Stone #67 is used in several
different instances including:
•  Fill.
•  Road and slab base.
•  Drainage lines around houses.
•  Top layer for driveways.
•  Great for paths.
•  Concrete production.
What is Crushed Stone #67?
Crushed Stone #67 sizes range from ¾”
to fine particles. This type of aggregate is
often selected for a variety of construction
purposes, but is considered to be a highly
decorative stone.
#67 crushed stone can be, depending on
quarry site, trap rock, granite, gneiss and
limestone. The final product is produced
by crushing the stone and then screening
it to size.

Crushed Stone Grade #1
Best Uses for #1
Crushed Stone #1 is used in several
different instances including:
•  Culvert Ballast.
•  Drain tile in basements.
•  Driveways.
•  Control riprap.
•  Decorative Purposes.
•  Drainage and septic systems.
What is Crushed Stone #1?
Crushed Stone Grade #1 ranges in sizes
from 2” to 4”, making it the largest of the
crushed stone grades.
Crushed stone at these larger sizes are
able to control erosion much more
effectively. If you are in an area that has a
lot of erosion, such as shorelines of rivers,
lakes or ponds, strategically placing
crushed stone grade #1 along those banks
will help prevent erosion.

Crushed Stone Grade #8
Best Uses for #8
Crushed stone #8 is used in several
different instances including:
•  Placement around trees for visual
appeal.
•  Sub-base for concrete sidewalks,
driveways and patios.
•  Mixed in asphalt.
•  Used in driveway and walkway
gravel.
•  Efficient for drainage systems.
What is Crushed Stone #8?
Crushed stone grade #8 is also known as
3/8” washed stone or clean crushed stone.
3/8″ crushed clean stone is an aggregate
that has been crushed, reduced in size
and screened through a 3/8” square
screen. The material is then run through a
machine to clean it thoroughly, ensuring
there is no leftover stone dust or other
residues.

Crushed Stone Grade #3
Best Uses for #3
Crushed stone #3 is used in several
different instances including:
•  Driveway gravel.
•  Walkways.
•  Drainage solutions.

What is Crushed Stone #3?
1 1/2” crushed stone is an aggregate size
that has been crushed, reduced in size
and screened through a 2 1/4” square
screen. The material ranges in size from 1″
to 2″. Crushed stone #3 is widely used for
constructive reasons, but also for
residential and nonresidential purposes.
1 1/2″ crushed stone is one the most
popular aggregates, and is also known as
NJ DOT #3 Stone, Clean Stone,
Bluestone, Crusher Stone and Crushed
Rocks.

Crushed Stone Grade #10
Best Uses for #10
Crushed Stone #10 is used in several
different instances including:
•  Commonly found in horse stables.
•  Efficient final base layer under
patios, walkways and other
pathways.
•  Research has shown that a mixture
of stone dust and compost produces
extremely fertile soil, and in turn,
yields excellent crops.
What is Crushed Stone #10?
Crushed Stone #10, or more commonly
referred to as stone dust, is an extremely
fine layer of pulverized stone.
There are a variety of reasons that
homeowners and contractors may choose
to use stone dust over other alternatives
as a final base layer. Due to it’s qualities it
is much easier to grade and work with
when placing your final base. After the
stone screenings have been compacted
and graded you do not need to worry
about it moving out of place.

Best Uses for #57
Crushed stone #57 is used in several
different instances including:

aggregate with or without a binder.

needed for use in Superpave Mixes or

The 3/4” crushed stone is an aggregate

and screened through a 3/4” square
screen.
