Air India

Air India is the flag carrier airline of India, headquartered at New Delhi. It is
owned by Air India Limited, a government-owned enterprise, and operates a
fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft .

The airline has its head quaters at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi,
alongside several focus cities across India. Air India is the largest international carrier
out of India with an 18.6% market share.
Over 60 international destinations are served by Air India across four continents. The
airline became the 27th member of Star Alliance on 11 July 2014.
History
The airline was founded by J. R. D. Tata as Tata Airlines in 1932; Tata himself flew
its first single-engine de Havilland Puss Moth, carrying air mail from Karachi to
Bombay's Juhu aerodrome and later continuing to Madras (currently Chennai).
After World War II, it became a public limited company and was renamed as Air
India. On 21 February 1960, it took delivery of its first Boeing 707 named Gauri
Shankar and became the first Asian airline to induct a jet aircraft in its fleet. In 2000–
01, attempts were made to privatise Air India and from 2006 onwards, it suffered
losses after its merger with Indian Airlines.
Air India also operates flights to domestic and Asian destinations through its
subsidiaries Alliance Air and Air India Express.
Logo
The logo of the new airline is a red coloured flying swan with the 'Konark Chakra' in
orange, placed inside it. The flying swan has been morphed from Air India's
characteristic logo, 'The Centaur', whereas the 'Konark Chakra' is reminiscent of
Indian's logo".

The new logo features prominently on the tail of the aircraft. While the aircraft is
ivory in colour, the base retains the red streak of Air India. Running parallel to each
other are the orange and red speed lines from front door to the rear door, subtly
signifying the individual identities merged into one. The brand name 'Air India' runs
across the tail of the aircraft.
Mascot
Air India's mascot is the Maharajah (high king). It was created by Bobby Kooka, the
then-commercial director of Air India, and Umesh Rao, an artist with J. Walter
Thompson Limited in 1946. Kooka stated that, Air India adopted the Maharajah as
its mascot in 1946. It was used in promoting it although initially designed only for the
airline's memo-pads.
The Maharajah began merely as a rich Indian potentate, symbolizing graciousness and
high living. And somewhere along the line his creators gave him a distinctive
personality: his outsized moustache, the striped turban and his aquiline nose.
He has completed 56 years and become the most recognizable mascot the world over.
His antics, his expressions, his puns have allowed Air India to promote it's services
with a unique panache and an unmatched sense of subtle humour. In fact he has won
numerous national and international awards for Air India for humour and originality
in publicity. The Maharajah was given a makeover in 2015 and the brand is
represented by a younger version.
The new version Is being welcomed by a new and younger version of the mascot, sans
turban with spiky hair, wearing jeans and sneak .. kers. While the trademark twirling
moustache remains, even t ..that’s been cut down to size.
In his first meeting with aviation ministry heads on June 212014 — less than a month
after taking office — Prime Ministe Narendra Modi had said that the aam aadmi must
replace the M .. the Maharajah as the mascot of Indian aviation. It came on the back of
his emphasis that the ministry formul .. formulating policies to make flying within the
reach of the common man and not just limited to the rich
To the people the Maharajah with his inimitable style, charm and wit is a very real
person. He's almost like a friend to every Air India traveller. A friend who reaches out
with warmth and hospitality, even to the farthest corners of the world

Expansions
Air India currently operates double daily Delhi – London Heathrow, one daily
Mumbai – London Heathrow, four times weekly Ahmedabad – London Heathrow and
3 times weekly Bengaluru – London Heathrow flights.
Air India also operates 7 weekly flights to Birmingham (split between Delhi &
Amritsar). Currently, Amritsar – Birmingham flights are suspended till June 2019 due
to Pakistan airspace closure. But back in January 2019 as well, we knew Air India is
planning a big expansion.

In the Summer Season 2019 report, it was confirmed that Air India has managed to
secure 62 departure slots for the entire season up from the 56 slots it held earlier. So,
Air India has additional slots to operate 3 weekly flights to London Heathrow this
summer.

And judging by the slot timing graph, it is clear that Air India has secured slots for 3
weekly 20:20 (19:20 adjusted to 20:20 due to Summertime) arrival and 22:05 (21:05
adjusted to 22:05 due to Summertime) departure from Heathrow.

Air India does have spare 787s which it can use to operate additional flights from
either Amritsar or Bengaluru or Newark. Plus they reduced flights to Copenhagen,
Madrid and Birmingham this summer so their fleet utilisation has
dipped further. I guess the never-ending delay in the opening of Pakistan Airspace is
playing a spoil-sport

2017
The Air India board has approved a proposal seeking to induct the wide-bodied
Boeing 787-9 aircraft in the fleet as it plans to expand operations to the US besides
launching services to Canada..

Air India’s integration into Star Alliance in 2014, along with the addition of the
fuel-efficient 787 Dreamliner, has greatly facilitated its international expansion over
the past four years.
Since 2013, Air India has added or resumed services to Sydney, Melbourne,
Birmingham, Milan, Rome, Moscow, Madrid, Newark, San Francisco and Vienna.
Washington Dulles will resume on July 7th and the remaining destinations, listed
above, are expected to follow later this year.

Air India has also been motivated to expand in the U.S. following an electronics ban,
issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in March 2017, which prohibits
travelers flying from a specified group of countries (United Arab Emirates, Saudi
Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan and Kuwait) from carrying devices
larger than a smartphone in carryon luggage

Air India to Increase the Number of Flights to Dubai from Early June
From June 1, AI will offer 3,500 more seats per week on Mumb .. dubai -mumbai
route and from a day later it will augment capacity by .. by the same number on the
Delhi-Dubai-Delhi route by adding .. a daily direct on those routes using a the Boeing
787 dreamliner .

13. Since last two years, Air India is converting green waster (garden waste) into
organic manure by vermi compost process. Till date, Air India processed and
converted green waste of almost more than 1000kg and utilised for existing gardens,
lawns, palms / trees, etc as manure. Approximately 1600kg of garden waste was
cleaned and lled in the units for composting. This process will generate 384kg of
CO 2 emissions whereas if the same amount of waste is disposed by land ll /
dumping method, then 1548 kg of CO emissions is generated. 2

Background of Air India

 Air India: Air India, formerly named Tata Airlines was founded by JRD
Tata. It was renamed as Air India, primarily operating on international
routes in 1946.
 Indian Airlines: Indian Airlines was a major Indian airline based in Delhi
and focused primarily on domestic routes, along with several international
services to neighbouring countries in Asia. It was administered by the
Ministry of Civil Aviation.
 Air India merged with the erstwhile Indian Airlines in 2007 based on
the recommendations of Justice Dharmadhikari committee report.
 As part of the merger process, a new company called the National
Aviation Company of India Limited (now called Air India Limited) was
established, into which both Air India and Indian Airlines would be
merged.

Air India-Indian Airlines Merger: A failed

one?
AI and Indian Airlines had been running profitably till 2005–06. However,
their future had already been compromised by then. It is commented that the
merger of Air India with Indian Airlines has created woes due to lack of
effective leadership and erroneous government policies.

Why was it not successful

 Immense competition from private and low-cost airlines.

 Increased cost pressures due to the acquisition of additional aircraft
Leadership crisis due to frequent change of the chairman- cum-managing
director.
 Air India could not fully use the bilateral rights, unlike foreign airlines
which took maximum advantage. So it was decided to go for the merger.
 Declining passenger traffic in the premium class.

AIr india scandal 2016

An investigation by Zee News (sister concern of dna) has thrown new light into
the bribe and bid rigging scandal involving former civil aviation minister Praful
Patel and a contract for Air India’s facial recognition software with Canadian
firm Cryptometrics. The Ontario court in Canada in 2014 convicted
India-born Candian businessman Nazir Karagir for offering bribes to Air India
officials and Patel to win the contract worth US$ 100 million. Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh in 2012 cleared Patel’s name after examining the matter at
the minister’s behest.

Debt 29000 crorrre

In 2018 , they decided to sell 74% of the shares of air india but their was not even
single buyer

Now again they are going to sell 100% stake

he airline’s poor financial situation is what makes it largely unappealing. The

airline had a debt burden of around ₹48,781 crore as of March 2017, which
poses a huge financial risk to a buyer.
To address this issue, the government has offered to transfer about a third of
the debt to a special purpose entity. But a buyer will still have to assume
responsibility for debt worth ₹33,392 crore after acquisition – still a
significant burden for many. The total current and non-current liabilities of
IndiGo, the market leader in terms of domestic market share, for instance,
add up to only around ₹14,000 crore.

Apart from the huge debt burden, Air India has also been losing money for

over a decade, with accumulated losses of ₹46,805 crore. In 2016-17, the

airline suffered a net loss of ₹5,765 crore. A major reason behind its huge
losses is the cost of paying interest on its massive debt

A code-share agreement is an arrangement where two or more

airlines share the same flight. A seat can be purchased from an
airline on a flight that is actually operated by another airline under a
different flight number or code.

Air India is owned by Air India Limited and is a government enterprise. Air India
Express is a low cost airline but is a subsidiary of Air India Limited. They operate
fewer flights, have a smaller fleet, and flies to fewer destinations.
