Definition of orthosis

a brace, splint, or other artificial external device serving to support the limbs or
spine or to prevent or assist relative movement.

Thoracolumbosacral orthosis

an external device applied to the trunk and extending from the upper portion o
f the thoracic spine to the pelvis;designed to provide immobilization of the thor
acic spine and thoracolumbar junction.

A thoracolumbosacral orthosis (TLSO) is a corset-style brace, designed to

restrict the movement of the torso. It is used to treat a variety of conditions,
from compression fractures to laminectomies, and is usually prescribed for use
after surgery.

INDICATIONS:
 Chronic Back Pain
 Compression Fracture
 Thoracic Postural Extension Alignment
 Spinal Stabilization
 Osteoporosis
 Post-Operative
 Paraplegia
 Kyphosis
 Spondylolysis
 Spondylolisthesis

Design of TLSO
The most rigid design is a custom-molded total contact TLSO, sometimes
referred to as a body jacket. It is prescribed for maximum restriction of flexion,
extension, and rotation.

The orthosis is usually bivalved, and Velcro straps attach the anterior and
posterior halves. The jacket is molded to firmly fit the pelvis below and may
extend anteriorly to the manubrium of the sternum and posteriorly to the
midportion of the scapula.

A rigid, total contact TLSO is particularly indicated for unstable fractures of the
spine when surgical stabilization is not indicated or when the adequacy of the
surgical stabilization is in question.

Our project TLSO

The materials we used

 White cloth- for coverage

 Electrical wire- for stability and strength
 Sponge- for comfortable
 Grommet- used as strap for increase and decrease the size orthosis

By combine those things we try to make TLSO

First we make the electrical wire zigzag like structure then cover by the sponge
and attached to the cloth.

Our TLSO seems like a waist coat and support from the shoulder to the lower
back posteriorly and the chest and the abdomen anteriorly.

It has three horizontal strap through abdomen and two sling that comes from
posterior to anterior through shoulder for the purpose of suspension.
