How to Install, Operate, and Maintain a Battery-

Operated Smoke Detector


Intro and Background
Thank you for choosing BRK Brands, Inc. for your Smoke detector needs.
This smoke detector purchased is an important component to ensure safety of your house and
people in the house. Key features include:
Single Button Test provides for an easy one button press to test, re-test or silence the alarm.
Dust Cover is included to keep the device(s) clean during construction.
Easy Installation features include a easy open front where batteries sit. Also, there are four
available screw holes for versatility.

To install this device you will/may need:
 Drill
 1-4 Screws
 9-volt battery
 Construction pencil
 Ladder
 Measuring tape

DANGER!
ELECRICAL SHOCK HAZARD. Turn off the power in the area that the alarm is being
installed. Failure to do so may result in electrical shock, injury or even death.

 This device must be powered by a 9-volt battery to function. Never remove the battery to
stop an unwanted alarm for this will remove protection.
CAUTION!
 Standing too close to alarm while sounding may cause damage to hearing, for it is loud
enough to wake you in an emergency.
 Do not paint over the unit. Paint may clog the openings to let smoke in and sound out.
This may cause the alarm to operate ineffectively.
Installation
WHERE TO INSTALL
Minimum coverage for Smoke Alarms, recommended by the NFPA, is one smoke alarm on
every floor, every sleeping area, and every bedroom.
Recommended Placement

 When on a wall, top edge should be placed in between 4 and 12 inches from ceiling/wall
line
 When installing on ceiling, place as close to center as possible
 In both cases, install at least 4inches from where the wall and ceiling meet to avoid dead
air space
NOTE: Avoid installing by a door or obstruction that could keep smoke from entering alarm.
WHERE NOT TO INSTALL
 DO NOT install in garages, kitchens, furnace rooms, crawl spaces and unfinished
attics, avoid extremely dirty, greasy or dusty areas.
 Do not install where combustion particles are produced. That happens when
something burns.
AVOIDING DEAD AIR SPACE
“Dead air” spaces may prevent air and smoke from filtering through the device. To avoid, follow
recommendations above.
NOTE: (for peaked/gabled ceilings) install at least 3 feet from the peak of the ceiling, measuring
perpendicular to the peak/gable.

Installation
1. Open the back of the device by pulling on the top of the front case covering to reveal
screw holes.

2. Line up screw holes with designated area on wall or ceiling with the alarm contraption
and front facing you. Mark the wall with pencil through the screw holes.

3. Remove alarm and drill in 1 screw or 4 if on wall or ceiling, respectively, over the pencil
marks made in the previous step. Leave about 1/8 of an inch in between screw and wall.

4. Secure alarm on wall and slide to the right, securing screws and alarm together.

5. With the front of the device open install the 9-volt battery matching the respective
negative and positive pins with positive on the right.
6. Close the front until it snaps into place.

7. Test alarm by pressing and holding the clear button on the face of alarm.

Conclusion
Now that the device is installed check and inspect screw placement to ensure security and
stability. Battery exchange will be required monthly or when alarm periodically chirps. Weekly
testing is required to ensure the detector is working properly.
WARNING!
After installation do not spray paint, cleaning chemicals or insect spray near or on detector.
Doing so may damage the device.

Troubleshooting
IMPORTANT!
If alarm test does not work exchange for another battery and/or check connections. If alarm does
not sound after correcting connection issues change battery immediately.
