1
First we need to adjust the page scale to fit the dimensions of our problem.
2
As a second stage we need to adjust project settings such as direction of the movement,
calculation method, number of slices, convergence tolorence etc. Set methods to Bishop
simplified and Spencer.
3
Now we are going to add the external boundary of our problem. Select “Add External
Boundary” from “Boundaries” menu.
Enter coordinates of the external boundary to the box located at the lower right of the
program window. First write x coordinate add a space and enter y coordinate.
4
After entering each points coordinate press enter.
After entering (25, -5) coordinate (final coordinate) write c and press enter this will close
the external boundary.
5
Now we are going to add water table. Select “Add Water Table” from “Boundaries”
menu.
6
Enter coordinates of the groundwater table to the box located at the lower right of the
program window. First write x coordinate add a space and enter y coordinate. After
entering each points coordinate press enter. In order to finish defining groundater table
press enter twice.
7
In the “Assign Water Table to Materials” dialog box clik “ok”, be sure that all materials
are selected.
8
Enter coordinates of the material boundary to the box located at the lower right of the
program window. First write x coordinate add a space and enter y coordinate. After
entering each points coordinate press enter. In order to finish defining material boundary
press enter twice.
9
Enter coordinates of the tension crack to the box located at the lower right of the program
window. First write x coordinate add a space and enter y coordinate. After entering each
points coordinate press enter. In order to finish defining material boundary press enter
twice.
10
11
Give a proper name to file and clik to “Save” button.
Soil properties is assigned from “Properties” menu and “Define Materials” tab.
12
Enter “clay” properties as shown in figure below.
13
We are going to assign material properties. From “Properties” menu click “Assign
Properties”
14
Click on “clay”, than click to first layer, similarly click on “silt” and than second layer.
15
In order to select search technique we will use “surfaces” menu, select “Surface
Options”.
In this problem we are going to use “Grid Search”. Make sure to set “Surface Options”
box should like figure below. Click to “Ok” button.
16
Select “Add Grid” from “Surfaces” menu.
Write upper left coordinates of the grid to the box located at the lower right of the
program window, press enter.
17
(0,20)
(10,10)
Write lower right coordinates of the grid to the box located at the lower right of the
program window, press enter.
18
“Grid Spacing” dialog box will appear, enter 10 for intervals of x and y direction as
shown in below figure. Click “Ok”.
19
Now your screen should be like this.
Press zoom all button “ ”, to fit the current problem into window.
20
Click compute button “ ” to start calculations.
After calculations finished, click to “Interpret” button “ ”.
In the SlideInterpret program minimum factor of safety and factor of safety contours are
displayed. In order to change the Calculation method click on the box located upper right
of the SlideInterpret program’s window.
21
SlideInterpret program displays the minimum factor of safety and factor of safety
contours according to Spencer’s method.
There are other options of calculations in Slide program. Close SlideInterpret and select
“Add Point” from “Focus Search” in “Surfaces” menu.
22
Write 0 0 to the box located at the lower right of the program window, press enter.
23
Click compute button “ ” to start calculations.
After calculations finished, click to “Interpret” button “ ”.
Only the factor of safeties of failure surfaces passing through toe of the slope (0, 0) are
calculated and displayed.
24
Another calculation option is to analyse factor of safety of a single surface which is
defined by its center and radius. Close SlideInterpret and select “Add Surface (center,
radius)” from “Surfaces” menu.
Enter center of the surface to the box located at the bottom right of the Slide window or
click to center point with mouse.
25
Enter radius of the surface to the box located at the bottom right of the Slide window or
drag the mouse to adjust slip surface and click to left mouse button.
26
Select grid and press enter.
27
Press save button “ ” to save changes.
Click compute button “ ” to start calculations.
