PREFACE

First of all, thanks to Allah SWT because of the help of Allah, writer finished writing the paper
entitled “Preposition” right in the calculated time.

The purpose in writing this paper is to fulfill the assignment that given by Mr. Bambang Irfani
as lecturer in samantics major.

In arranging this paper, the writer trully get lots challenges and obstructions but with help of
many indiviuals, those obstructions could passed. writer also realized there are still many
mistakes in process of writing this paper.
because of that, the writer says thank you to all individuals who helps in the process of writing
this paper. hopefully Allah replies all helps and bless you all.the writer realized tha this paper
still imperfect in arrangment and the content. then the writer hope the criticism from the
readers can help the writer in perfecting the next paper.last but not the least Hopefully, this
paper can helps the readers to gain more knowledge about samantics major.

CHAPTER I
PRELIMINARY
1.1 BACKGROUND
In the United Kingdom, a preposition (the future of) the nickname of small words. Seen
glimpses of prepositions is just short words are not important, but in fact has a very important
function.
Preposition is always followed by a noun (noun) or pronoun (pronoun). A preposition is a
word that suggests a liaison relationship between the noun that follows him and one of the basic
elements of a sentence, that is subject, verb, object or complement. A noun or pronoun that
follows the preposition is the object of a preposition. Pronouns used in this position is always
an object pronoun, like me, you, him, her, it, us and them. Prepositions plus object called a
preposition phrase (prepositional phrase).

1.2 FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM

Based on the background of these problems then we formulate the contents of the paper are
as follows:
- Identify the sense of Preposition
- Identify the types of preposition
- Identify ways to use

1.3 PURPOSE

Studying and understanding this paper materials namely about preposition then expected we
can understand the sense, different types, and how to use it. As for any other purpose the
preparation of this paper was to fulfill the course Structure.
CHAPTER II
THEORY AND DISCUSSION

2.1 DEFENISION OF PREPOSSITION

Preposition have been called the biggest little words in English. They are
usually quite short and signification looking, but they have very important function. A
preposition is an important part of the English language. It is used to show a
relationship between the noun and pronoun in a sentence. A preposition must always
be followed by a noun or pronoun in a sentence. It can never be followed by a verb.
There are many examples of prepositions that will make it easy to understand how the
parts of a sentence fit together and how the rules apply when it comes to using a
preposition in a sentence.

2.2 TYPE OF PREPOSSITION

A preposition can be classified into 6 types :


1. Simple preposition (Kata Depan Tunggal)
Simple prepositions are words like at, for, in, off, on, over, and under. These common
prepositions can be used to describe a location, a time or place.
Some examples of common prepositions used in sentences are:
 She was hiding under the table.
 I got a package from a friend.
 I have liked that song since 1999.

2. Double Prepositions(Kata Depan Ganda)


Double prepositions are two simple prepositions used together. Some examples are into, upon,
onto, out of, from within.

Some examples of Double prepositions used in sentences are:


 Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess.
 She never leaves without her phone.
 The caterpillar turned into a butterfly.

3. Compound Preposition (Kata Depan Majemuk)


Compound prepositions are similar to double prepositions but are generally
created by prefixing a preposition to a noun, adjective or adverb. Some examples are
across (on cross), along (on long), behind (by hind), about (on by out), above (on by up),
before (by fore), beneath (by neath), beside (by side), between (by twain), beyond (by
yonder), but (by out except), within (with in), without (with out), etc.

Some examples of compound Preposition used in sentence are:


 He was between jobs at the moment.
 My car is parked behind the store.
 My cat ran along the track with me.
4. Participle Preposition (Kata Depan Partisif)
Participle (or participial) prepositions have endings such as -ed and -ing.
Examples are words such as considering, pending, concerning, provided.

Some examples of Participle Preposition used in sentence are:


 The teacher said no talking during class.
 He was frustrated at the situation.
 The dog kept following him home.

5. Phrase Preposition (Frase Kata Depan)


Phrase prepositions include a preposition, an object and the object's modifier.
Examples include phrases like because of, by means of, with regard to, and on behalf
of.

Some examples of Phrase Preposition used in sentence are:


 She plays ball as well as the boys.
 The baseball game was cancelled because of the rain.
 He succeeded by means of determination.

6.Disquised Preposition (Kata Depan Tersembunyi)


A disguised preposition is shown in such words below :
Behind → “be” : by hind = behind
Across → “on” : “a” on cross = a cross
