Wind Load to BS 6399-2: 1997 Code of practice for wind loads

This part of BS 6399 is applicable to the UK. The climate dependant factors, (for altitude, direction, season & probability), are
calibrated for the UK. Whilst general methodology and pressure coefficients may be used in other climates, referenced wind data
must be consistant with the assumptions in this standard. Vs to be obtained from the relevant authority. When referenced wind
speed is given as a peak gust, the hourly mean value may be obtained by dividing peak gust by the factor from Table 4 for the
reference terrain & height above ground.

Stage 1 Dynamic Classification

Building Type Factor Kb = 2 Table 1 (Bolted Steel)
Effective Height of Building He = 55 m
Dynamic Augmentation Factor Cr = 0.1 Figure 3

Stage 2
As value for Cr falls within the limits of applicabilty the Standard Method will be adopted.

Stage 3
Basic Wind Speed (3 sec Gust) Vb = 46.6 m/s
Factor Sb Sb 1.48 Table 4
Basic Wind Speed (1 hour mean) Vb = 31.5 m/s cl. 2.2.1 fig. 6 pg.19

Stage 4
Site altitude measured in metres above sea level = 55 m
Altitude Factor, topography insignificant Sa = 1.055 cl. 2.2.2.2 pg.20
Direction Factor (for all directions) 1 cl. 2.2.2.3 pg.27
Seasonal Factor (permanent building) 1 cl. 2.2.2.4 pg.27
Probability Factor (normal design application) 1 cl. 2.2.2.5 pg.27
Site Wind Speed (Vb x Sa x Sd x Ss x Sp) Vs = 33.2 m/s cl. 2.2.2.1 pg.18

Stage 5
Terrain Catagories Effective Height He = 55 m

Stage 6
Choice of Method Standard Method to be adopted

Stage 7
Site in country or up to 2 km into town. cl. 2.2.3.3 table 4
Closest distance to sea upwind less than 0 km cl. 2.2.3.3 table 4
Terrain & Building Factor Sb = 1.48 cl. 2.2.3.3 table 4
Effective Wind Speed Ve = 49.163 m/s

Stage 8
Dynamic Pressure qs = 1.48 kN/m² cl. 2.1.2 pg.13

Stage 9
Pressure Coefficients Cp = See Structural Report
