Week 003: Gases and Thermochemistry

Scuba Diving
• Boyle’s Law
• When a diver goes down, water pressure around
him increases, causing air in his scuba equipment
and body to compress. This also causes
compression of air in diver’s ears.
• When a diver goes up, water pressure decreases,
causing air in his scuba equipment and body to
expand. Diver needs to release air while
ascending.

Energy and Human Life

• Energy consumed by human bodies is being
converted to work, thermal energy or stored fat
• All functions of human body needs energy
• Useful work – requires force exerted in a distance
(i.e. running, climbing stairs, etc.)
