IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF DAVID

BY PASTOR PETER AMENKHIENAN

INTRODUCTION

God does not use us as we are; He develops us and takes us through a process. The way David
was developed is an example for us to learn from.

When God called David out of the midst of His brothers. And He was the least qualified as far as
human beings are concerned. The least of his brethren – out of an unwholesome relationship.
By every stretch, disqualified; but by heart, was qualified.

After this step, you come to the second step of SOLVING GIANT PROBLEMS. The anointing upon
you is going to attract problems. The response to the yoke or burden is the anointing. Yoke
limits.

3 IMPORTANT CONCEPTS

1. The measure of anointing in your life will attract comparable yokes. If you are anointed
To be a king, you are not going to fight dwarfs. No dwarf challenges. The measure of
anointing will bring you comparable challenges.

2. The significant burden that you face are equal to the calling on your life. You can tell
where you are going by the problems that confront you.

3. Your test reveals your qualification. It reveals where you are. The test determines where
you are going. You can always tell where a person is going by the test you are
confronted with.

The size of the yoke you destroy determines the size of reward you receive. You will be
rewarded according to the problem you are solving. David was young but the anointing
was big; Seventeen (17) year old given a problem equivalent to a king’s anointing.

1
THE CHALLENGES DAVID FACED

CHALLENGE: A difficulty that tests one’s ability and skill.

David did not receive affirmation from those around him. His greatest obstacles were created
by people he ought to look up to.

CHALLENGES:
1. Jesse, the Father did not feel that David had Leadership Potentials

Anointed but un-noted. Anointing without anything leads to annoyance.

When Samuel arrived at Jesse’s house to anoint one of the boys. Jesse lined up the ones
he thought had king potentials. But God doesn’t see as man sees.

“And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely
the Lord’s anointed is before him”. 1 Samuel 16:6-7

2. David’s brothers did not think he had Warrior’s Potentials.

When Israel was at war, David was left behind to care for the sheep - the Father’s flock.
His brothers rebuked him when he showed interest in the battle.

“And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger
was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? And with
whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the
naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightiest see the
battle”. 1 Sam. 17:28

His brothers saw him as nothing more than an errand boy. But he was a boy with a
mission. He believed in his mission and refused to be discouraged.

3. King Saul did not think David had Champion Potentials.

Saul said: “… for you are but a youth and he a man of war from youth”.

“And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go
and fight with this Philistine. And Saul said to David, “Thou art not able to go against

2
this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his
youth”. 1 Sam. 17:32-33

Saul thought David wasn’t a champion material. But David did not allow Saul’s low
expectation of him hinder him.

4. Goliath did not think David had opponent Potential.

This was the final insult for David.

“And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves?
And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. And the Philistine said to David,Come to
me and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beast of the field”.
1 Sam. 17:43-44

You can easily determine the strength of a person by the amount of opposition it takes
to discourage him or her.

David was able to go beyond:

 LEADERSHIP CHALLENGES {KING SAUL}

 SKILL CHALLENGES {GOLIATH/SAUL’S ARMOUR}
 SIZE CHALLENGES {ARMOUR}
 AGE CHALLENGES {YOUTH}

David overcame all these limitations, oppositions and challenges; killed Goliath and
eventually becomes king.

LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF DAVID

1. Develop and train yourself during down times. Each time you find yourself in trouble.
Learn something new.

2. Find something to offer; acquire skill. Those with skill are not easily killed.

3. Don’t focus on what you are going through but on where you are going. E.g Joseph,
Jesus, David,

3
4. Each time people reject you, knock you down and thrust you out or scheme you out,
don’t get bitter, get better.

5. Challenges, limitations, and oppositions cannot stop you unless you allow them.

6. See opportunities in every opposition; promotion in every problem.

7. Don’t try to be someone else when others impose limitations on you as Saul tried to
push David into.

8. Those who have expired cannot inspire. So, if you want to be inspired, don’t go to those
who have expired.

9. Competence without confidence brings confusion. Competence with confidence brings

congratulations.

10. Never fight a battle that has no reward. David/Goliath; David/Saul.

11. If you can be trusted with troubles, you can be trusted with triumph.

12. Don’t let temporary location become a permanent destination.

“David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his
brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down thither to him. And every
one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was
discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them:
and there were with him about four hundred men. And David went thence to Mizpeh
of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray
thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me. And he brought
them before them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that
David was in the hold. And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold;
depart, and get thee into the land of Judah, Then David departed, and came into the
forest of Hareth”. 1 Samuel 22:1-5

13. Those who thought they will never need you may later find that they can’t do without
you.

4
14. Forgiveness moves you further (forward) and unforgiveness moves you (forward) and
unforgiveness moves you backward.

15. Your haters can become your helpers.

16. Valley leads to mountains: if you ever get victory in the valley, you will have victory on
the mountain

17. There are things only you have solution for.

18. Your confidence in God’s ability is not arrogance.

19. New circumstances and situations don’t change God. He is truly the same yesterday,
today and forever.

20. What is not tested cannot be trusted.

21. Prepare for the future -2 Samuel 21:15-22. Every weapon you need for future battle can
be possessed now. (5 stones)

DAVID’S APPLICATION OF WISDOM TO RULE AND REIGN

1. David behaved wisely even when he was blessed.

“And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.
Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.
… Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went
forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his
name was much set by”. I Samuel 18:14-15,30

“And he said unto his men, The Lord forbid that I should do this thing unto my master,
the Lord’s anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed
of the Lord. So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to
rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way. David also
arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, my lord the
king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and
bowed himself. … Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand:
for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that
there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against
thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it”. I Samuel 24:6-8,11

5
David gave Saul due honour even when Saul was after him, he called him lord, master
and father.

As you associate with a man of God, familiarity can make you forget whom you are with.
See he mourned Saul after his death- “How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the
battle”.

2. David did not violate fathers.

““And he said unto his men, The Lord forbid that I should do this thing unto my
master, the Lord’s anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the
anointed of the Lord. I Samuel 24:6

“Honour thy father and mother which is the first commandment with promise, that it
may be well with thee and thou mayest live long on earth” Ephesians 6:2-
3

3. David listened to advice. Advice from Abigail.

“And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day
to meet me. And blessed be thy advice, and bIessed be thou, which hast kept me this
day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand”.
1 Samuel 25:32-33.
4. David had a Prophet ( pastor) to guide him.

“That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar,
but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains. And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all
that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee. And it came to pass that night, that
the word of the LORD came unto Nathan, saying, Go and tell my servant David, Thus
saith the LORD, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in?” 2 Samuel 7:2-5

“And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him,
There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor ….And David's anger
was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the
man that hath done this thing shall surely die: And he shall restore the lamb fourfold,
because he did this thing, and because he had no pity. And Nathan said to David, Thou
art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I

6
delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; …. And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned
against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin;
thou shalt not die”. 2 Samuel 12:1, 5-7, 13

David consulted with his Pastor when he wanted to build the temple and when he
sinned.

5. David was quick to see and admit mistake.

“Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight?
thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy
wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon …. And David said
unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD
also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die”. 2 Samuel 12:9, 13

6. David was merciful

“And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him
kindness for Jonathan's sake?” 2 Samuel 9:1

“Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the
table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of
God and man”. Proverbs 3:3-
4

7. He never neglected fellowship with God.

“For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the
house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness”. Psalm 84:10

“I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD”.
Psalm 122:1

“But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them”.
1 Samuel 18:16

8. David did menial jobs with joy - he became Saul’s armour bearer.

7
“And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he
became his armourbearer”. I Samuel 16:21

9. Stayed with what he had tested in difficult times

“And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head;
also he armed him with a coat of mail. And David girded his sword upon his armour,
and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go
with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him. And he took his
staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a
shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he
drew near to the Philistine”. I Samuel 17:38-
40

10. Ministered to others - ministered to Saul.

“And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an
harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil
spirit departed from him”. I
Samuel 16:23

11. He fid not rebel and did not tolerate rebellion against the king. He did not follow
opinions of rebels.
He even put to death those who claimed to have killed Saul and Ishbosheth-

2 Sam 1:15-16
“And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he
smote him that he died. And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy
mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD's anointed”.
2 Samuel 1:15-
16

“When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good
tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would have
given him a reward for his tidings: How much more, when wicked men have slain a
righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his
blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth? And David commanded his
young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged

8
them up over the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth, and buried it
in the sepulchre of Abner in Hebron”. 2 Samuel 4: 10-12

WISDOM: David knew that once a “king killer”; always a “king killer”.
Remember that he who criticizes others to you will also criticize you to others.

People who had the ability to kill their leaders are dangerous to be around you.

A Person who is loyal to someone else is likely to be loyal to you.

12. He followed Divine Direction by enquiring from God before taking any step.

He allowed the leading of God’s Spirit. 1 Samuel 30:1-20

“Therefore David inquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines?
And the LORD said unto David, Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah. And
David's men said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in Judah: how much more then if
we come to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines? Then David inquired of the
LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I
will deliver the Philistines into thine hand. … Then said David, Will the men of Keilah
deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver
thee up”. 1 Samuel 23:2-4 12

13. He loved God, love the church and was a worshipper.

“For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the
house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness”. Psalm 84:10

“I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD”. Ps. 122:1

“Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on
high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I
will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I
satisfy him, and shew him my salvation”. Psalm 91:14-16
