show band 1 (natural green) higher than band 2 (natural red) and band 3 much higher than both.

Once the atmospheric correction to the radiance data has been carried out, the data arc
converted to reflectance using the “log residual” normalisation technique (Green & Craig,
1985) in RASTUvS software. From these reflectance data, where vegetation is extensive, a
Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is calculated for die image and values
greater than 0 used to create a mask to eliminate those pixels dominated by vegetation.
Where vegetation cover is light, this procedure is not carried out. Mineral indices are then
prepared for the suite of minerals shown in table 2 using the methodology as listed.

Table 2: the alteration minerals mapped with their respective processing routines and algorithms.

The minerals selected are typical of those found in a variety of mineralised hydrothermal and
metasomatic (skam-type) systems and the reference spectra are taken from the USGS spectral
library available in ENV1 software and convolved to the ASTER band positions. The suffix
number of each reference spectrum is that from the USGS reference library.

Two muscovite indices are created in an attempt to map any variability in muscovite
mineralogy from high AlOH variants (referred hereinafter as high AlOH Illite) to low-AlOH
more MgOH, FeOH bearing and referred to hereinafter as low AlOH Illite). The wavelength
