MATHEMATICS LESSON PLAN

Teacher:

Date: Class: Form 3 Time: 80 mins

Unit: Statistics
Topic: Probability
Pre-knowledge: Convert between decimals, fractions and percentage representation of a number, interpret
and analyse ratios, concept of probability, terminology associated with probability (event, certainty, chance,
fairness, possibility, risk), plotting graphs.

OBJECTIVES: Pupils will: Classification

1. Apply the probability formula. K
2. Calculate the probability of an event. PS
3. Recognise the relevance and importance of probability in real life scenarios. Aff

SET INDUCTION: (Time: 5 minutes)

The following song will be played while students are settling down. Then, it will be played over to introduce
them to the lesson of the day.

SECTION 1 (Time: 60 minutes)

Content:
Teaching Points:
1. Probability theory can be applied to real world scenarios to solve problems.
1. The probability of an event is the number of successful outcomes divided by the total number of
possible outcomes.
2. The theoretical probability of specific events can be tested using experiments such as tossing a coin
(Events: Head or Tail), rolling a die (Events: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) or pulling a card from a standard deck of
fifty-two playing cards (Events: Red card, A spade, A face card etc. ).

we try it.

CLOSURE: (Time: 3 minutes)

Students will be asked to give responses to the following question:
Is the formula for theoretical probability accurate?

FINAL EVALUATION: (Time: 10 minutes)

Students will be required to complete an online quiz requiring them to apply their knowledge of probability.

Reasonable level of Achievement: Objective

CONTINUOUS EVALUATION:
Teacher will create a blog where students are required to post their findings and interpretation of their
results. Students are required to answer the following questions based on their findings:
1. Using the formula for theoretical probability calculate the probability of the following events:
 a Head when a coin is tossed
 a Tail when a coin is tossed
 Red when a card is drawn from a standard deck of 52 playing cards
 #8 when a card is drawn from a standard deck of 52 playing cards
 Heart when a card is drawn from a standard deck of 52 playing cards
 Queen when a card is drawn from a standard deck of 52 playing cards
 1 when a die is rolled
 2 when a die is rolled
 3 when a die is rolled
 4 when a die is rolled
 5 when a die is rolled
 6 when a die is rolled
1. Compare the theoretical probabilities calculated above to the experimental probabilities obtained in
the experiment. Discuss your observations

GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS

Die Investigation
1. Roll a die and record the number you see.

1. Repeat 50 times and record the results.

2. Using the data collected, complete the following table:

Coin Investigation

 Use a coin of your choice, 5c, 10c, 25c.

 Complete the table prepared to record the outcomes.

 Flip the coin of your selection in your groups 50 times, each time recording in your table

time you got a head or tail.

 Students will look at results at the end of this investigation, discuss in their groups and

conclude their findings.

Playing Cards Investigation

1. Mix up and shuffle your deck of playing cards
1. Place all cards face down

2. Select a card at random and record what it is (eg Queen-Hearts ; 5-Clubs)

3. Replace the card selected and shuffle the pack again.

4. Select another card again and record what you get.

5. Repeat this process 50 times

Using the data collected complete the following table:
