140 Teacher's notes 39 Phrasal verbs with up Aim Preparation To teach and practise some common phrasal verbs with up (give up, turn up, etc.) Copy the handout on page 141 ~ one copy per student or pair. Introduction (5 minutes) Introduce the subject by writing the following on the board: usually ___up at 7.30 every morning. Don't leave your things on the floor. them up! ‘The taxi____ up outside the station. Ask the students if they can suggest verbs that will fill the gaps (answer: get, pick, pulled/drew). Explain that get up, pick up and pull up are all phrasal verbs. Ask them if they know any other phrasal verbs with up. Write them on the board. Tell the students that in today’s lesson you will be looking at other phrasal verbs with up. Presentation (15 minvies) Activity A Let the students work in pairs. Give each pair a copy of the handout. Tell them to match the verbs with their definitions. Check orally, then let them test each other by taking it, in turns to read out a definition and see if their partner can give the correct phrasal verb. Practice (20 minutes) Activity B Divide the class into groups of three or four, In groups, they discuss each of the questions, taking it in turns to give their Conclusion (10 minutes) A quick revision exercise, Read out the following sentences. After each one, pause and ask students to suggest a phrasal verb that can be used. 1 We're going to decorate the kitchen this weekend. 2 He was attacked and hit badly as he left the nightclub. 3 If you don't know what the word means, find out from the dictionary. 4 Nowadays more and more children are being raised by a single parent. 5 Could I sleep at your place tonight? 6 The terrorists destroyed the bridge using dynamite. 7 Pam and Cathy didn’t arrive until well after midnight. 8 One day I’m going to stop smoking! 9 My school closes for the summer on June 12th. 10 Sorry I'm late.
