Exercise No.1

Solve the following right triangle using tangent

and secant

The following right triangle has an acute angle of 23° and an hypotenuse
equal to 18 units in length. Solve the right triangle, in other words find
the missing sides and angles.

Find the adjacent side by using the secant

The secant involves the hypotenuse as well as the adjacent side that’s
why it can be used to find the missing side, as follows:

● secant 23° = adjacent side/hypotenuse

● secant 23° = adjacent side/18
● adjacent side = 18(secant 23°)
● adjacent side = 19.55 units

Find the opposite side by using the tangent

Once the adjacent side was found it`s time to calculate the opposite side
by using the tangent which involves the adjacent and opposite side.
Follow the next steps:

● tangent 23° = opposite side/adjacent side

● tangent 23° = opposite side / 19.55
● opposite side = 19.55(tangent 23°)
● opposite side = 8.29 units

Find the missing acute angle

According to Geometry the addition of the angles of any triangle equals

180°. The missing angle can be calculated by using such statement
along with some Algebra, as follows:

● ∠A +∠B + ∠C = 180°
● ∠B = 180° - ∠A - ∠C
● ∠B = 180° - 23° - 90°
● ∠B = 67°

Exercise No.2
Solve the following right triangle using tangent
and sine

The following right triangle has an acute angle of 27° and an hypotenuse
of 14 units in length. Calculate the missing sides using the tangent as
well as the sine.

Find the opposite side by using the sine

The sine is the trigonometric function that involves the opposite side as
well as the hypotenuse therefore it can be used to calculate the missing
side as follows:

● sine 27° = opposite side/hypotenuse

● sine 27° = opposite side/14
● opposite side = 14(sine 27°)
● opposite side = 14(0.4540)
● opposite side = 6.356

Find the adjacent side by using the tangent

After the opposite side was found calculating the adjacent side is pretty
straightforward since the tangent can be used to do so, as follows:

● tangent 27° = opposite side/adjacent side

● tangent 27° = 6.356 / adjacent side
● adjacent side = 6.356/tangent 27°
● adjacent side = 6.356/0.5095
● adjacent side = 12.47

Find the missing acute angle

According to Geometry the addition of the angles of any triangle equals

180°. The missing angle can be calculated by using such statement
along with some Algebra, as follows:

● ∠A +∠B + ∠C = 180°
● ∠B = 180° - ∠A - ∠C
● ∠B = 180° - 27° - 90°
● ∠B = 63°

Exercise No.3

and sine

Solving right triangles means calculating the missing sides and angles
by using the known measures of one angle and one side. In the next
exercise a given right triangle has an acute angle that measures 21° as
well as an opposite side that measures 13 units in length. Let’s solve the
triangle.
Find the adjacent side by using the tangent

Tangent is the trigonometric function that involves the opposite side as

well as the adjacent side therefore it can be used to calculate the
missing side as follows:

● tangent 21° = opposite side/adjacent side

● tangent 21° = 13/adjacent side
● adjacent side = 13 / tangent 21°
● adjacent side = 13/0.3839
● adjacent side = 33.86

opposite side is already known, follow the next steps:

● sine 21° = opposite side/hypotenuse

● sine 21° = 13 / hypotenuse
● hypotenuse = 13/sen 21°
● hypotenuse = 13/0.3584
● hypotenuse = 36.27

Find the missing acute angle

According to Geometry the addition of the angles of any triangle equals

180°. The missing angle can be calculated by using such statement
along with some Algebra, as follows:°

● ∠A +∠B + ∠C = 180°
● ∠B = 180° - ∠A - ∠C
● ∠B = 180° - 21° - 90°
● ∠B = 69°

Exercise No.4

Solve the following right triangle using secant

and cosecant

In this exercise the right triangle has an acute angle of 40° in measure
as well as an adjacent side 15 units in length. Follow the steps below to
solve this right triangle.
Find the hypotenuse by using secant

Secant is a trigonometric function that involves hypotenuse as well as

adjacent side. Hypotenuse is the unknown side therefore such
trigonometric function can be used to figure out the hypotenuse as
follows:

● secant 40° = hypotenuse/adjacent side

● secant 40° = hypotenuse/15
● hypotenuse = 15( secant 40°)
● hypotenuse = 15( 1.3054)
● hypotenuse = 19.581

Find the opposite side by using cosecant

Now, the cosecant involves the hypotenuse along with the opposite side,
therefore it can be used to figure out the opposite side as follows in the
next simple steps:

● cosecant 40° = hypotenuse/opposite side

● cosecant 40° = 19.581 / opposite side
● opposite side = 19.581/cosecant 40°
● opposite side = 19.581/1.5557
● opposite side = 12.586

Find the missing acute angle

According to Geometry the addition of the angles of any triangle equals

180°. The missing angle can be calculated by using such statement
along with some Algebra, as follows:°

● ∠A +∠B + ∠C = 180°
● ∠B = 180° - ∠A - ∠C
● ∠B = 180° - 40° - 90°
● ∠B = 50°

Exercise No.5

and Pythagorean Theorem

Solving right triangles requires you to calculate the missing sides and
angles by using the known values. In this case a right triangle has an
acute angle equal to 36° in measure and an adjacent side of 14 units in
length. Let’s solve this triangle.

Find the opposite side by using the tangent

The opposite side divided by the adjacent side equals the tangent.
Therefore such trigonometric function can be used to calculate the
missing side as follows:

● tangent A = opposite side/adjacent side

● tangent 36° = opposite side/14
● opposite side = 14(tangent 36°)
● opposite side = 14(0.7265)
● opposite side = 10.171 units
Find the hypotenuse using the Pythagorean Theorem

Pythagorean Theorem states that c2 = a2 +b2 therefore it can be used to

calculate the hypotenuse since the lengths of the other sides are already
known, follow the next steps:

● c2 = a2 +b2
● c2 = (10.171)2 + (14)2
● c2 = 299.44
● c2 = √299.4
● c = 17.304

Find the missing acute angle
