QUESTIONS:

Q#1 Write down the effects produced by pilocarpine & atropine on eye.

Q#2 Name any 3 parasympatholytics which produce mydriasis.

Q#3 How will you differentiate between papillary dilatation produced by atropine from that produced by
adrenaline.

KEY:

Q#1 Pilocarpine: Colour Size of pupil Light reflex Conj. Reflex Corneal reflex

Pink Decrease + Ve + Ve + Ve 2

Atropine: Pink Increase – Ve + Ve + Ve

Q#2 Atropine, Homatropine, Tropicamide, Cyclopentolate, Eucatropoine. 1

Q#3 Mydriasis produced by atropine like drugs is complete and is associated with loss of light &
accommodation reflex, while mydriasis produced by alpha stimulating sympathomimetic
drugs is incomplete and without any effect on light and accommodation reflex. 2

Unknown drugs

• If there is dilation of pupil, light reflex is+ve, corneal and conjunctival reflexes are +ve and color of
conjunctiva remains pink then drug is adrenaline

• If there is dilation of pupil, light reflex is -ve, corneal and conjunctival reflexes are +ve ,and color of
conjunctiva becomes pale then drug is aTROPINE

• If size of pupil remains same, light reflex is +ve , color of conjunctiva remains pink but corneal and
conjunctival reflexes are lost it means drug is xylocaine

• If size of pupil have decreased , light reflex is +ve , color of conjunctiva remains pink and corneal and
conjunctival reflexes are +ve it means drug is pilocarpine
