Miss Katie Carion

46137 Winston Dr
Shelby Township, MI 48315-5615

Dear Miss Carion,

Thank you for contacting me to share your thoughts about gun

violence following the recent tragedy in Parkland, Florida. It is an
honor to represent the people of the 10th District of Michigan and I
appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me.

The senseless tragedy in Parkland is difficult to grasp and I grieve for

the victims and their loved ones. As a father of a child in grade school
and also a law enforcement officer, I think of my own family as I
reflect on the events that unfolded in Florida. While no law can
prevent all malicious individuals from committing such acts, there
certainly is room to evaluate how best to prevent and mitigate such
events. I am committed to this effort.

Many have called for increased gun control measures and restrictions
that drastically reform current federal, state, and local policies for gun
possession. I understand this response, especially after such
devastation, and I am open to an honest review of all contributing
factors and reasonable measures to prevent future tragedies. It is also
my duty to uphold the Constitution, including the Second
Amendment, and it is important that I evaluate all legislative or
administrative action with this foundation in mind.

I believe it is essential we explore and appropriately address the root

cause of the problem—not just the effect. There will never be one
single answer, but where there are good answers, we should
implement them. Accordingly, I am a cosponsor of the Student,
Teachers, and Officers Preventing School Violence Act (H.R. 4909).

This is a bipartisan bill which would update an existing program to
provide training and technical assistance for students, school
personnel, and law enforcement to identify signs and appropriately
report signs of potential violence. You should also know I supported a
measure that, among other provisions, improves reporting to the
National Instant Criminal Background Check System. This is an
important step forward to strengthen our current laws and hold those
accountable who do not adequately enforce existing gun sale
requirements.

I will continue working to find sensible ways to keep troubled

individuals from obtaining firearms, and getting them help they need,
while upholding the Constitutional rights of all citizens. It is imperative
and conceivable to achieve both charges. Please know that as
Congress continues working to address some of the deeper issues that
lead to violent crimes, I will keep your thoughts in mind.

Thank you again for contacting me on this issue. Please do not hesitate
to contact me again in the future on any issue.

Sincerely,

Paul Mitchell
