Position on the Article “California Will Require Solar Power for New Homes”

The addition of solar panels as a requirement in the building code was a gigantic move
that California took. However, the initial costs of installing solar panel will add thousands of
dollars to the cost of home which would raise the doubt whether this new requirement is
favorable or not especially that this was implemented during the time when there was a shortage
of affordable housing in the state. But to think of it, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

One of the disadvantages of solar power in California is the high initial costs. It was
stated that for the residential homeowners, based on a 30-year mortgage, the price of solar panel
adds $8,000 to $12,000 to the cost of a house although customers can save for about $80 on
monthly heating, cooling and lighting bills. So after the initial investment has been relieved, you
will practically have lesser electricity costs and it is even possible that these costs will be
eliminated. There is also a buy-or-lease option for solar panels which would help consumers to
afford the purchase of the devices.

In addition, despite its relatively expensive initial price, solar energy is eco-friendly
because it is clean, renewable and sustainable. It does not contribute to pollution and global
warming.

Another issue of solar power is it can be easily affected by natural occurrences such as
rainy or winter seasons. During these periods, solar energy harnessed from the sun is little or
none at all. However, there is a backup battery which serves as a storage so energy can still be
generated in the residences.

Aside from these, the requirement of solar panels promotes local economic growth. Not
only it is cost effective but it also helps people to be employed. As it was stated in the article, the
industry employs more than 86,000 workers which is a rather fair number.

All in all, solar power to be used as the primary energy source in California is favorable
given its advantages not only to the economy but to the environment as well.
