 Mortar has to be used within 120 minutes after mixing. Mortar, which has hardened
or stiffened due to hydration of the cement, shall not be used.
6.3 LAYING
Concrete surface in contact with masonry shall be hacked and surface roughened for proper
bonding.
 All concrete blocks shall be soaked with water before being used and the surface of
the base also has to be wetted before use.
 Before starting of block work a 3 mm thick damp proof course shall be laid over a
bed of mortar at plinth level in continuous strips with 150 mm overlaps in length and
full laps at angles.
 Block work has to be building to the dimensions and type in accordance with the
drawings.
 While laying the first course of masonry units, one layer of mortar shall be placed on
the base covering the bottom surface. Masonry units shall be laid on a full bed of
mortar and gently pressed so that mortar can get into the space between two blocks to
ensure good adhesion. As each unit is laid, the excess mortar extruding from the
joints should be cut-off cleanly with the trowel.
 Cross-joints and wall joints shall be flushed and packed with mortar to prevent
formation of hollow pockets.
 Blocks shall be laid in stretcher bond on a full bed of mortar and the joints shall be
uniform not exceeding 10 mm.
 Where wall faces are to be rendered, the joints shall be raked out to form keys. No
half- cut blocks are to be used to form a bond. Where block wall widths are specially
indicated on the drawings, make necessary variation to the dimension to suit standard
block width.
 The maximum height of block work built in a day shall be 1.0 m.
 Verticality of the wall faces and horizontality of the courses shall be checked with
plumb bob and spirit level respectively. All aligning & verticality of each masonry
unit to final position shall be done while the mortar is soft.
