Marriott International, Inc. began in the U.S. in 1927, when J. Willard Marriott and his wife
opened a little root beer stand in Washington, DC, later called the Hot Shoppe. The Marriott’s
acquired their first contract with the U.S Treasury for the food service management in 1939.
Within 30 years of their time they opened up their first hotel in Virginia under the name of
Marriott International in 1957. By 1967 they expanded their business into airline food services,
and lodging. Mexico was their first country where in they step their foot internationally. They
opened up their first international hotel in Mexico in the year 1969. By 1972, J.W Marriott Jr.
was named as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and later in they opened their first hotel in
Amsterdam, Europe. In the year 1981 they opened their 100th hotel in Hawaii. Over the years the
company expanded and opened many hotels over the span of time. The company flourished and
opened more than 3700, lodging properties in more than 74 countries (Marriott News Center,
2013). They didn’t stop then the company operated under franchises and successfully established
18 brands including Marriott Hotel & Resorts, JW Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance, etc.

Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) is how companies manage their business processes to
produce an overall positive impact on society.

The aims to provide an overview about the Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) performed
by Marriott International Inc. As the company has an obligation towards the society, it has its
obligations by making adequate preparations welfare to the society. The company has a small
interest in safeguarding the natural and cultural heritage for the society and moreover, it’s
involvement in the environmentally friendly operations.

Currently, Marriott International has introduced CSR strategy named SERVE 360. The objective
of this strategy is to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Moreover,
the company aims to align its business activities with the United Nations. Through, this strategy
company aims to capture business growth while maintaining an equal balance in the elsewhere
i.e., owners, customers, associates, environment and communities.

The motto of the strategy Serve 360 is, Doing Good in Every Direction. The company has
committed to:
1. Reduce the use of water by 15%, wastage of food to nearly 50%, waste and carbon 45%
and 30% respectively.
2. The company has thought of providing assistance to 15 million people and to take
advantage of their business skills.

“According to the owner of JW Marriott, Jr. the company has a significant impact on the CSR
commitment as it blends with society by providing volunteering service of around 150,000
employees throughout the globe. Moreover, their owners, franchisees, suppliers, and guests are
actively engaged in the building Habitat for Humanity and raising funds for the Children’s
Miracle Network Hospital.”

Shelter and Food…


…… “The company aims at addressing housing and hunger needs”

All around the world, guests call Marriott their "home away from home." Which is why it's only
natural for them to help create shelter places for those in need, provide housing and feeding the
hungry, including in days of calamity.

The Company employees and Clients built over 300 homes in 15 nations including that of the
United States, Indonesia and Mexico through a 12-year association with Habitat for Humanity
International.

While the company as well as its partners contribute approximately $200,000 yearly to the
cause, staff roll up their sleeves, work as teams, and create affordable and accessible housing for
others. Marriott's Fairfield Inn brand has literally made Habitat its trademark community service
activity, introducing builds into important events such as conferences for general managers and
proprietor and franchise owners.

Marriott hotels around the world also work with soup kitchens and food banks in their local
areas, many of which are in the U.S. are members of America's Second Harvest — The Nation's
Food Bank Network. Marriott International has helped contribute almost $300,000 since 1992.
Sadly, there have been times when the societies where they live, or work are affected by natural
calamities as well as other disasters.

They are contributing to the American Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross
and Red Crescent Societies Disaster Relief Fund and providing the means for Marriott Rewards
members to join them by contributing their points.

Environment…
…… “working toward a greener, healthier planet”

Clean air initiatives Marriott led the industry in going 100 percent smoke-free across all hotels in
the United States and Canada, creating clean air in guest rooms, restaurants, lounges, meeting
rooms, public space and employee work areas. Encompassing more than 2,300 hotels, this was
the broadest such decision in the industry.

Reduce-reuse-recycle:

More than 96 percent of Marriott hotels around the world actively recycle, and Marriott
headquarters in Washington, D.C., recycles more than a third of its solid waste. The company is

currently piloting a program at 30 hotels to measure, standardize and expand recycling


companywide.

Clean-up campaigns

Marriott employees love to pitch in…by picking up litter. Whether we do it on our own or as part
of a larger campaign, cleaning up our streets, parks, beaches and other public spaces is one of our
favourite ways to improve the communities in which we live and work.

Wildlife preservations
Marriott believes in responsibly providing authentic experiences for guests in a range of
locations. Their hotels strive to be good environmental stewards and responsible neighbours.

Moving forward
Marriott is a founding member of the International Tourism Partnership, a global industry group
based in the United Kingdom that promotes responsible and environmentally-conscious tourism.
Participation includes contributing to the development of the “Sustainable Hotel Siting and
Design Guide” and sponsoring and serving on the editorial board of Green Hotelier magazine.

Readiness for Hotel Careers…

Marriott International has made sure to provide opportunities to the next and upcoming
generation. The main aim of the company is to provide the young people with the challenging
background and making sure that they take appropriate decision in these stuff background
provide them with different alternatives to solve these issues/background.

According the “International Tourism Partnership’s Youth Career Initiative” Marriott


International has made sure that 1000 young people get a promising future and make sure the
programme that they organize provides them with the required classroom training moreover,
they get an on-the-job hotel experience. The company has already started this training
programme in many such as Australia, Brazil, Poland, Romania and Thailand. They have also
thought of expanding this programme to Costa Rica, Egypt, Jordan, Mexico, etc.

In addition, Marriott International is providing them with career counseling and financial
assistance for the deprived people who aren’t able to pay their education fees. Moreover, the
company has taken interest to provide scholarships for the students who are brilliant at doing
their work and make sure they get proper assistance so that these student with talent succeed in
life.

“J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation grants up to $500,000 to Hispanic College Fund
and United Negro College Funds”. Besides Marriott leaders are providing career counseling,
mentoring, and finally internship to students. “The company has a nine-year partnership with
National Academy Foundation were in they have contributed and provided assistance of more
then $400,000 every year.”

Vitality of Children…
…… “aiding sick and impoverished children”

It is a sincere willingness of Marriott employees across the world to respond to the needs of sick
and poor children. Kids are vulnerable to the effects of poverty in several societies where
they operate, such as crime, neglect, and exploitation.

In North America, the support of the Children's Miracle Network for Marriott is focused on a 25-
year partnership that will fund 173 affiliated children's hospitals across the United States and
Canada. Since then, they raised over $50 million to help children in the local communities who
need hospitalization. In collaboration with guests, business partners and employees who organize
golf tournaments and other events, most funds are raised.

In cooperation with Safe Kids China, Marriott Hotels in all parts of China and Hong Kong have
set up a fire and brand prevention program. Hotels raised over $200,000 for the funding of the
programme, contributing to educating about fire prevention in 220,000 students in 13 cities in
China.

Marriott hotels have joined SOS Children's Villages in Austria, Egypt, Germany and
Switzerland, providing family-run care for neglected and orphaned children. Employees
contributed $400,000 to the renovation of homes and the entertainment of the children. Hotel
guests also contribute $100,000 in cash to the cause.

Embracing Diversity and People with Disabilities…

The JW MARRIOTT team has recognized that diverse and inclusive environment strengthens
their company’s culture and provides a competitive advantage.

Diversity
With more than 400 minority and women owned hotels, they are well on their way to achieve
their goal of 500 hotels. They also have hosted several educational summits, highlighting how
prospective sites are evaluated and how hotels are built, financed and operated.

Supplier diversity
After surpassing their supplier diversity goals, they achieved a record of $400 million in
spending with diverse suppliers. They had set a new goal that was to reach out their program to
United Kingdom beginning outreach to gay and lesbian owned suppliers.

Workplace diversity
They remain committed to workplace diversity. More than 50 percent of the company’s
supervisors are minorities. Of the new managers that were hired, 27 percent were minorities and
46 percent were women. Marriott also achieved its highest ever number of minority college
recruits—more than 30 percent were minorities and 16 percent were African American.

They also support dozens of minority professional organizations that provide valuable training
recruiting and business opportunities for their members.

People with disabilities


Marriott enjoys a well-deserved reputation as an advocate for people with disabilities. For many
years, their hotels have worked with community-based disability organizations and high schools
to introduce and help train people with disabilities for employment in their industry. They
introduced “We Welcome Service Animals” a training program which helps our hotels enhance
the stay of guests with disabilities who are assisted by service animals.
Over 18 years, the Marriott Foundation for People with Disabilities has built a highly reputed
program. More than 10,000 young people with disabilities have received job and life skills
training through Bridges and were placed in mainstream employment with 1,500 employers,
including Marriott. The vast majority of these youth are minorities and many face socioeconomic
challenges. The program is funded through government grants, the J. Willard and Alice S.
Marriott Foundation and funds raised by Marriott and its business partners.
A model for other Marriott hotels, their Hong Kong hotels partner with the Hong Chi
Association to provide career training to young people with disabilities. Their hotels have built
and furnished sample hotel rooms for training. They also purchase produce grown by the
students in the organization’s garden and will support Hong Chi’s green-roof project. Since past
few years, 20 Hong Chi clients have been hired by Marriott in Hong Kong.

Business Ethics and Human Rights

Marriott International adheres to high ethical and uncompromising legal standards. Their Code
of Business Ethics provides managers and employees with detailed guidance on the right way to
conduct business. This includes advising them of the laws relating to antitrust, unfair
competition, political contributions, abuse of purchasing power, commercial and political bribery
and more.

Commitment to human rights


At Marriott, they support and respect the protection of human rights within the company’s sphere
of influence. They endeavor to conduct their business operations accordingly. This includes
standing against such tragedies as human trafficking and the exploitation of children
The company also published a Human Rights Policy Statement and communicated it to
employees. The policy aligns with government, business and public concern about tackling these
issues. Marriott actively engages with industry and non-profit groups to encourage dialogue and
share best practices.

Working with suppliers


Their suppliers play a vital role in upholding Marriott’s reputation for excellence with guests,
employees, business partners and other important stakeholders. They have high, yet achievable
standards for sourcing the best quality goods and services.
Just as important, Marriott expects its suppliers to uphold high ethical standards and follow all
applicable laws. Adhering to these principles and doing business with those who do the same
will help them maintain a competitive advantage and the pride and confidence of our employees,
customers and clients.
