Genesis of NDRF

2006 NDRF formed on 19 Jan 2006 with 8 Units - 2 each from


BSF, CRPF, ITBP & CISF

2009 All 8 Units came under the control of NDRF in September


2009

2010 Induction of 2 new units (1 each from BSF & CRPF)

2015 Induction of 2 new units of SSB

2019 Induction of 04 new Unit each from ITBP, ASSAM RIFLES, &
2 from BSF.
Total 12 units functioning and 04 above units are under
process.

Role of NDRF
1. Specialized Response. (During Disaster)
2.(a) Proactive deployment during impending disaster situations.
(Impending Disaster)
(b) Familiarization exercises with public so that public is sensitized.
(Impending Disaster)

3. (a) Acquire and continually upgrade its own training and skills.
(b) Impart basic and operational level training to State
Response Forces (Police, Civil Defence, NCC/Home Guards) Non
Disaster
(c) Community Training & Preparedness. Period

(d) Mock Drills, Reconnaissance/vulnerability/disaster mapping,


Rehearsals.
FEATURES OF NDRF
 It is the humanitarian forte of the Government of India.
 Pro-active availability and coordination with states and all
stake holders.
 Prompt response
 A multi-skilled, technical force.
 A young force with 20% being rotated every year.
 Each battalion has 18 teams, out of which 6 trained in CBRN.
 Has doctors and para-medics trained in disaster medical
emergency management with each team.
 Has a canine squad in every team.

Strategy for more Effective Deployment in Operations /
Training at no cost
1.(a) Using trained beneficiaries as a Force multiplier
(b) Increasing training so that public responders can increase and
contribute to disaster resilience – each one teach one
(c) We have increased the number of Mock Drills to once a week per
Battalion so that more persons can be trained.
2. Filling up of existing vacancies.
3. At the cost of equipment, introduction of technology and
increasing the authorisation of equipment per Battalion.

• NDRF personnel fully trained & capable in CSSR (Collapsed
Structure Search & Rescue) operations.
• MFR (Medical First Response)
• Flood And Mountain Rescue Operations
• Deep Diving Search & Rescue
• Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Emergencies
• Canine and Technical Search
• Specialized manpower (Engineers, Doctors, Technicians,
Paramedics, Electricians, etc)
• Animal Disaster Management
• Psycho social care of disaster affected community and capacity
building
Composition of NDRF Battalion

 Authorized strength of 1,149 personnel.


 18 specialist teams of 45 members each to handle natural
disasters and CBRN emergencies.
 Each team of 45 has 2 Engineers, 2 Paramedics, 1 Technician,
1 Electrician and 2 Canines
 Total number: 18 Teams x 12 Battalions:
 216 Teams.
 Total authorized strength of NDRF : 13,843 Personnel
