FIBER VENEER:

A Design Study on Natural Fibers as Tobacco

Products Residue Adsorption Veneer to Address
Third-Hand Smoke in Philippine Casinos

Abstract
Many years of smoking in casinos cause the enormous development of harmful
residue on walls, furniture, and in carpets. The layers of smoke residue penetrate
deep into the surfaces of materials because of the amount of smoking that takes
place 24/7 in an indoor environment. Those residual contaminants are known as
third-hand smoke. By using a chemical detection technique known as liquid
chromatography-mass spectrometry, areas with indoor smoking have determined
the presence of chemical residues, such as the potent lung carcinogen known as
NNK, cotinine, and nicotine that can harm individual’s health when exposed to it.

Casinos frequently have higher concentrations of smokers as guest than any areas
do, and smoking can occur for all intents and purposes at all times of the day.
Ventilation systems and larger space did not matter for third-hand smoke residue for
it remain at high level on surfaces and in dust. Casinos only hope to make their
environment significantly safer for its guests after imposing smoking was only by
intensive surface cleaning and in some cases, surface replacing. It is also critical for
the casino operator to consider the cost and effort needed to clean up the toxic
legacy of tobacco products usage. The more extended tobacco is smoked inside,
the more difficult and expensive it will become to clean up casinos’ indoor condition.

This study will make an in-depth discussion and exploration of Talisay seed extract,
Manila hemp and Salago fiber capacity to eliminate smoke residues and validating
its composition for lowering odor intensity through data analysis by measuring static
and dynamic headspace extraction. This experimentation will help develop an
alternative surfacing material on casinos made of natural fiber veneer as third-hand
smoke residue adsorption substantial to prevent the risks from third-hand smoke
found on the surfaces of casinos considering the health and well-being of casinos’
employees and frequent guests.
