Background: Coronary heart disease is a function disorder of the heart due to a

constriction of a coronary arteries. One of the risks of this disease can be due to age. This
coronary heart disease can also be caused by a bad lifestyle, eating unhealthy foods such
as cholesterol and lack of exercise can also cause hypercholesterolemia. There are a lot
of various kinds of plants such as Black Cumin (Nigella Sativa L.) which is believed by
the people to increase HDL and decrease LDL levels in the blood.

Purpose: to know the effect of extract black cumin seeds (Nigella sativa L.) increase HDL
and decrease LDL cholesterol levels of white rats (Rattus Norvegicus) in male Wistar
strain which given high fat diet.

Method: This research was conducted in Biochemistry Laboratory Faculty of Medicine

This research was conducted in Biochemistry Laboratory Faculty of Medicine University
Hang Tuah Surabaya. This experiment uses post test only control group design using 24
of rats which divided into 4 groups, namely the negative control group ( standard diet and
CMC-Na 1%), positive control group (high fat diet and CMC-Na 1%), the treatment group
one (high fat diet , extract of black cumin seeds (Nigella sativa L.) dosage 126 mg/KgBB
and CMC-Na 1%) and the treatment group two (high fat diet , extract of black cumin seeds
(Nigella sativa L.) dosage 252 mg/KgBB and CMC-Na 1%). This research was carried
out for 28 days, on the 15th day the treatment was carried out by giving black cumin seed
extract (Nigella sativa L.) at a dose of 126 mg / KgBB and 252 mg / KgBB added with 1%
CMC-Na solution given intragastrically for 14 days and continued by termination.

Result: the normality test and homogeneity test on HDL and LDL cholesterol levels
showed the results of this were normal distributed and homogeneous data variance. Then
proceed with the One-Way ANOVA test with the results of p> 0.05 which mean that black
cumin seed extract (Nigella sativa L.) can increase HDL and decrease LDL but there are
no differences or significant changes.

Conclusion: Giving black cumin seed extract (Nigella sativa L.) had no effect for
increasing HDL and decreasing LDL cholesterol levels of white rats (Rattus norvegicus)
in male Wistar strain which given high fat diet.
Keywords: black cumin seed extract , HDL cholesterol levels, LDL cholesterol level,
