Kade Lanoux Wins Jambalaya Festival World Championship!
Congratulations Jambalaya Asso-
ciation, you have done it again.
This year’s 52nd Annual Festival
went off without a hitch and was a
huge success.
I have been attending the Jamba-
laya Festival for 40 plus years and
this year’s festival seemed to have it
all. The
food, the events, and the
entertainment makes this event one
of the most diversified
festivals in the state.
A wide variety of entertainment
from bands like Eddie Smith, Mike
Broussard & Nite Train and Chee
Weez rocked the stage while home-
town
favorite bands such as Bac Trac and
Na Na Sha kept our
dancing shoes moving. One of the
highlight moments of the festival
was the appearance of Chase Tyler.

In addition to our local
musicians Rockin’ Dopsie
partied late in to the night.
It was exciting this year when
second time champion, Kade
Lanoux with helper Jared White,
was crowned the World Champion
Jambalaya Title.
This year Danny Robert and
Kurt Waguespack worked their
majic and won the Champ of
Champs Cooking Contest for the
first time.
Throughout my time at the festi-
val I ran into to old school Gonza-
les friends that always make a
reference to the
Festival that was once downtown
Gonzales.
Everybody likes to talk about the
days of old. The success was
judged by the garbage left in the
street. As exciting as those days

were the current Jambalaya Festival
represents Gonzales 2019 and our
community. It’s clean, organized,
and full of musical entertainment.
Along with the good time the festi-
val represents a commitment to the
claim Jambalaya Capital of the
World.
The Mini-Pot Jambalaya Cook-
ing Contest at the 52nd Annual
Jambalaya Festival was held along
the Bayou and was sponsored by
VFW Gonzales
Memorial Post 3693.
This year the Mini Pot
Cooking Contest held their
Champ of Champs Cook Koby
Thacker who took home the tro-
phy.
Youngsters and adults
competed in one of the festivals
most popular event. Cooking in
mini pots started in the 1970s, and
is an event everyone enjoys and
families can participate in it to-
gether.
While at the the festival I saw
many friends. Eric and Stump did-
n’t miss a beat. They cooked and
partied with the rest of us.
Mike and Steve Broussard played
together as the jitter
bugging kept us from thinking of
the heat.
If you are new to the area and
have never attended the festival
you are missing a good time.
Along with the cooking and danc-
ing there is a 5K Run,
car show, craft vendors and
carnival rides. Next year give the
festival a try. You will experience a
good time and truly understand
why Gonzales is,

This year’s GGC Circle of Roses Recipient is Marilyn Rice. She became a
GGC member in 1997 and served in various committee leadership positions.
Marilyn is a member of the Ascension Parish Master Gardener Association
for 12 years, and she is the founding member of the Pelican Point Garden

held its final business meeting
for the 2018-19 calendar year
on May 1 at the Clarion Hotel
and with lunch at Mike
Anderson’s with desserts and
coffee at Dale Bowman’s
house. The club celebrated
perfect attendance, a Circle
of Roses membership, flower
show results, and 10+ years
memberships. Each member
shared her most memorable
moment of the year. GGC
President Jamie Trisler’s
reflections attributed the club’s
established longevity and
vitality to its strong ongoing
leadership and dedicated Federation, Inc. They were
membership for shared Award #2-3 Yearbook Award
responsibility and (1st Place), Award #17 Arbor
volunteerism. Award winner, and Award
#5B horticulture Honor Roll

Richey stated the GGC to all the GGC Members!

Announces Winners 1st 2nd
The Gonzales Garden Club held its
Annual Floral Design and Horticultural
Exhibit at the Gonzales library on April
3rd. Members presented twelve
floral designs reflecting the theme
“America, the Beautiful”. Horticultural
specimens on display were labeled for
identification. Library visitors voted for
their favorite niches for the People’s
Choice Awards. Winners were
announced by the library’s public
relations coordinator at the club’s
May meeting. The club appreciates
the library’s accommodations as
well as the public’s interest.

in the set wasn’t a brush for
blending eyeshadow or using in
your crease. I highly recommend
bringing a backup blending/crease
eyeshadow brush unless that’s too
much for your tote during travel.

 11-year old Camden Zoller sends e-mail to Sheriff Bobby Webre in
hopes of meeting him to live out his dream
11-year-old Camden Zoller
sent Sheriff Bobby Webre an
email stating, "Hey this is
Camden Zoller and I live in
Prairieville and I'm 11 years
old and I'm gonna be a police
officer when I'm older and I
wanna see if I can talk to
Sheriff Bobby Webre or a
police officer in Ascension
Parish about stuff and what it
takes and i can show you
some of my police gear."
After receiving this email,
Sheriff Webre immediately
cleared his schedule to meet
with Camden, the future
deputy.
After scheduling the meeting
with Camden's dad, he
mentioned that Camden sent
the email on his own; "which
was very impressive," said
Sheriff Webre.
11-year-old Camden had one
request. His request was that
his 10-year-old brother tag
along with him who was also
interested in becoming a
police officer.

every question about what it

11-years-old, Camden

and sent me a message,"
added Webre. "I hope that in
the next 10 years, I will be
able to watch Camden and
Hayden start their careers
in law enforcement."

Regardless of what stage of life
you're in, you must make financial
and investment decisions that will
be with you for the remainder of
your years. But the moves you
make when you’re just starting
out in your career may be quite
different from when you’re retired.
So, let’s look at some of these

• In your 20s and 30s: During

place yourself on a sound

 River Parishes Community College
hold 2019 Commencement Ceremony
River Parishes Community
College (RPCC) held their
nineteenth commencement
ceremony on Tuesday, May
14, 2019 at the Lamar-Dixon
Expo Center in Gonzales,
Louisiana. RPCC Chancellor
Dale Doty presided over the
ceremony and handed out
nearly five hundred associate
degrees, technical diplomas
and certificates. Over three
hundred eighty students
earned Associate degrees with
one hundred two of those
earning Louisiana Transfer
Associate degrees. Students
also earned Associate degrees
in Teaching, Drafting & Design
Technology, Business Office
Administration, Instrumenta-
tion, Industrial Maintenance
and one hundred ninety-two
earned their Associates in
Process Technology. Technical
Diplomas were conferred for
students completing studies in
Practical Nursing, Business,
A/C & Refrigeration, Welding,
Business, Instrumentation,
Drafting and Process
Technology. Certificates were
awarded for Medical Assisting,
Medical coding, General Stud-
ies and Process Technology.
Twenty-five students earned
their high school equivalency
diplomas through the Work
Ready U program at RPCC.
RPCC is an open-access,
multi-campus community
college with campuses in
Gonzales, Plaquemine, and
Reserve, Louisiana. The
graduation ceremony included
students from all campuses
and as the college holds an
annual commencement,
included students completing
their coursework in the earning both a high school

Elders at Risk:
Preventing
Elderly Scams
Financial scams that target seniors
are a growing problem. An encounter
with a financial scam artist can put an
entire lifetime of work, savings and a
good name at risk. Learning to
recognize some of the most common
financial scams can help you protect
yourself or an elderly loved one from
becoming a victim. These financial
scams can take many forms, but some
of the most widespread abuses include
identity theft, predatory lending, and
telemarketing fraud.
Scam artists have adapted to modern
technology and are able to obtain
enough information about an elderly
person to build trust via telephone,
mail, or email. According to the
Federal Bureau of Investigation,
seniors are at an increased risk of
becoming a scam victim due to their
polite and trusting manner, their lack
of knowledge pertaining to the
Internet, and their susceptibility to
products promising increased
cognitive function, virility, physical
conditioning, anti-cancer properties,
and so on. In a country where new
cures and vaccinations for old diseases
have given every American hope for a
long and fruitful life, it is not so
unbelievable that the con artists’
products can do what they claim.
Identity theft occurs when someone
uses your personal information, such
as your name, social security number,
or credit card number, without your
permission. Identity thieves obtain
information by taking mail from your
mailbox, going through your trash for
discarded receipts and bills, by asking
for it over the phone, or by phishing.
Phishing is a tactic where identity
thieves send spam or pop-up messages
in order to obtain your personal
information. That information is then
used to access your bank accounts,
run up credit card charges or apply for
a loan in your name. These messages
often appear to be from a legitimate
business, banks, or even a government
agency. You should never respond to
unsolicited emails or pop-up messages
that ask for your personal information.
Seniors should regularly review credit
card, banking, and other financial
statements to ensure they are correct
and may also want to consider using
direct deposit for Social Security and
other payments to prevent mail fraud.
Predatory lending, also known as
loan fraud, involves a wide range of
abusive practices used to take
advantage of seniors who are in the
market to refinance their homes.
Predatory lenders target seniors who
are in need of money to consolidate
debts or meet emergency expenses.
Some common predatory lending
practices are charging excessive fees,
including a prepayment penalty for
paying off the loan early, or refinanc-
ing a loan to generate a fee without
providing any real benefit to the
borrower. Comparison shopping,
taking time to understand the terms of
the loan, and seeking the advice of a
relative or trusted friend are all steps
seniors can take to be smart con-
sumers when in the market for a loan.
Billions of dollars are also lost each
year due to fraudulent telemarketers.
These calls often take the form of
charity, prize, or sweepstakes scams
and often target seniors. If you are
approached by an unfamiliar charity,
ask for written information to be sent
to you. Legitimate charities will be
happy to provide details about their
work and will never insist that you act
immediately. Also be aware that scam
artists try to trick people by using fake
names that are very similar to
legitimate, well-known charities.
Under Louisiana law, charitable
organizations that use a professional
solicitor to help receive donations and
professional solicitors who solicit on
behalf of charitable organizations are
required to register annually with the
Louisiana Attorney General’s Office.
When called by any type of
telemarketer, you should ask for the
company’s name and address and ask
the caller to send you written materials
to study before you make any
purchase. When in doubt, seek the
advice from someone that you trust
before you send any money or provide
your bank account, credit card, or
social security numbers to solicitors.

has been the victim of elderly fraud,
you should contact the Consumer
Protection Section of the Louisiana
Attorney General’s Office
at 1-800-351-4889.

Cooking Out the Kinks at Todd B’s
“Woo Woo, Woo Woo Woo!”
Ascension Magazine was invited to a
group of cooks practicing for the up-coming
Jambalaya Festival.  As I walked among
the cooks I realized something. This
practice round was so much more than
knocking the rust off
for the festival.
It was family,
friends and
cajun tradition.
There were lessons learned, memories
made and that’s enough for a great time.
Now that the festival has finished I
looked backed through these photos. I am
sure at least 50% of these folks won
trophys, advanced forward to finals and
supported each other till the end.
In reality, a group of the best Louisiana
has to offer. Congrats to all.

had taken the lead and the

gate for the Belmont. By 5:45,
both LSU and War of Will had
run out of gas unless you
count our gas can bullpen
which can explode at any time.

mood to take a breath-taking
ride with Ross again.
The next morning I hunted
for sympathy among my fellow
Pirates and got none. Seth
Babin whose son Cooper plays
with Cade had left Traction to
go to Brusly to watch his
daughter play four games.
After finishing past midnight,
he had to assume his assistant
Pirate coaching duties around
8 Sunday morning while his

wife Megan took the daughter
back to Brusly at 7.
Meanwhile, Pirate tent captain
Mike Robert told of a 12-hour
day at the park as his hearty
crew sipped beer and
margaritas waiting for pool play
to conclude. I was not even in
their uncomfort zone so I shut
up and watched the Pirates
win two games to move into
the quarterfinals.
But alas-the Bucs also ran
out of gas in the hot Sunday
midday and we were
knocked out.
There is no need to replay
the extra-inning tragedy that
ended LSU’s season later that
Sunday. Suffice it to say that
reliever Devin Fontenot
certainly gave it his all and
gave his offense every chance
to win that game. And if
there’s any consolation, at
least I can pull for FSU coach
Mike Martin to win the College
World Series in the last year of
his amazing career.
Broke, busted, disgusted, I
called my golfing buddy and
designated driver Tommy
Douglas on Monday morning
looking for a sympathetic ear.
But he told me of a tale of a
2012 Panama City World
Series with his son Jack-future
governor of Louisiana-that
again one-upped any of my
weekend mishaps.
“We went 0-2 in pool play,”
Tommy began, “when I told the
kids and parents to stay close
to the phones because there
may be some weather coming
in.” “Some weather” turned out
to be a record 21 inches of rain
falling in two days completely
flooding out the rest of the
tournament.
“We were stuck for eight
days with nothing to do,” he
continued. “We couldn’t even
get to the Wal-Mart because
we were knee-deep in water
in the parking lot.”
Oh, the horror-no Wal-Mart.
But then after a pause, he put
the final dagger in my heart.
“Even the dog track was
closed.” Noooooooo!!!
“Finally, a putt-putt golf
opened up and we spent three
days trying to make a hole-in-
one on number 18 and win
$50 but of course, none of
us did.”
Then he had one more shot
in his cannon.
“But as bad as it sounds,
someone is always worse off
than you are,” he added. “The
last day we were there, two
parasailers decided to brave
the high winds and fly
high above the waves.
Unfortunately, their ropes
broke and they crashed into
our condo-one of them face
first. Miraculously, one
escaped with only minor
injuries but the other spent
months in the hospital with
some serious body repair.”
Man, all this story needs is
Clark and his Griswold family.
On a positive note, we head
back to Orange Beach the last
week in June with only one
team-the Pirates-playing this
year. But wherever you’re
going, I wish you fair skies,
games on time and pitchers
that throw strikes (or strikers
on the pitch for you soccer
moms and dads). Don’t
forget the sun screen and do
me one favor-pack a jet pack,
just in case.

Double Tripping
Most seniors that have been
involved in hunting and fishing
for most of their lives have
probably been part of some type
of illegal activity in the past.
Through the process of
education, most of us have
learned to become better
stewards of our passion
throughout those years. Now
believe me it’s quite a challenge
to be one-hundred percent
within the law at all times, but
with some effort it can be done.
Although there’s a chosen few
that choose to commit some
and baiting, the majority of the
gang have left those bad habits
behind. With that being said,
there are still quite a few out
there that will still try to get
away with some illegal activities
if they believe that they can do
it without getting caught.
One particular greedy bad habit
that some still believe is ok is
double tripping. Most species if
not all, of fish and game have a
daily limit with a possession
limit of two or three days of
daily limit numbers. Meaning
you can bring home several
defined as catching or killing
your limit for that day and after
returning to land, camp, or
home with your catch or kill to
then go back and try to harvest
more on the same day. There’s
way too many supposedly
responsible citizens that for
some reason to this day think
that this is alright to do. In the
first place, the state of Louisiana
has some of the most liberal
limits and seasons in the
country. If you’re not satisfied
with our game laws, then shame
on you. I know a lot of people,
but I must say that I do not
know anyone who has the need
for more than twenty five specs
a day, or more than five reds

The Pete and Peg Spring
Retreat has come and gone
once again and we all made it
back in one piece.
It is always a great time
and this year was no differ-
ent. However a unique situa-
tion cropped up on the very
first day. It was reported that
the beer cart ran out of
NO! NO! After a few
polite nudges and maybe a
threat. I can attest the golf
pro, Ashton, got the
message. The beer cart never
ran out again.
This year a tribute for
friends that have passed on
were recognized. Tom
Marchand, Lionel Glaze,
Eddie Wilson and Bud
Lambert were honored by
drinking a toast/beer to
their memory.

 Ingredients:
Cooking Gourmet at Home
with SNO’S SEAFOOD & STEAKS 1 cup grits
4 cups water (unless you are using quick grits-
then follow instructions on package)
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup diced smoked sausage
1 cup diced white onion
½ cup green onions (sliced)
Salt, Red Pepper, Black Pepper to Taste
Method:

In a cast iron pot, thoroughly brown your smoked sausage

then remove from pan. Next, cook your onions in the
same pan until they are beautifully caramelized. Return
your sausage to the pan and you water and butter. Bring
the water to a boil then slowly stir in the grits. Bring
Jambalaya Grits mixture back to a boil, then cover and cook over medium
heat for approximately 40 minutes or until a smooth
Prep: 15 minutes texture is reached. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Cook: 20 minutes You can serve these grits with almost anything.
