about Philippine theatre.

But first who has an idea on

what is a theatre? Anyone? (students raise their hands)

Yes? That is correct. (students answer may vary)

Theatre is also called plays in
general, it can be a form of
entertainment. And there are 3
different kinds of theatre here in
our country.

The first one is (points at a

student) please read.

KOMEDYA
-comes from 16th century
Spanish comedia (play) (Student reads what is written
- A play written in verse which on the board, meaning of
uses traditional methods of the komedya)
marcha (march) for the
entrance or exit, batalla
(choreograph fighting) and
magia (magical effects)
- One of the colorful theatrical
traditions in the Philippines used
by the Spanish as a method to
spread Christianity
- A theatrical form that
describes the conflicts of
Christians and Muslims.

There are 2 types of komedya:

the secular komedya and the
religious komedya

1.SECULAR KOMEDYA
-usually performed in town
celebration
- Example: “Moro-Moro”,
popularized in the 1600’s, it use
stories that revolve around
kings, queens, princes,
princesses, animals and
supernatural beings.
- Most of the time it portrays the
clash between Christians and
Filipino Muslims
-Another example is the “TIBAG”
or “ARAKYO” in Nueva Ecija
that is performed during
Santacruzan, it is a
reenactment of the search for
the Holy Cross by Queen
Helena and her son Emperor
Constatine

Have you watch santacruzan

during May? Them that is an
example of secular komedya. Yes ma’am!

2.RELIGIOUS KOMEDYA
-mostly performed to enhance
religious festivities
-focuses on the life of religious
icons. (Jesus Christ, St. Michael
and other Patron Saints)
- Examples: Siete Palabras,
Comedia de San Miguel and
Senakulo; the Lenten
presentation of Passion of Christ

Now let move on to the second

kind of theatre in our country.

SARSUELA
-an art form of lyric
theatredrama, comical in
nature and is incorporated with (Student reads what is written

was made popular in the
Philippines in the 1800’s

realities and stories and social
relations which viewers can
relate in their lives such as
elections & feasts, marriage &
family, Vices & values
- “WALANG SUGAT” is one of
the most famous Sarsuela in the
country

And lastly, (points a student)

please read.
BODABIL
-Another stage show that
became popular during the (student reads the meaning of
Japanese period based on the bodabil written on the board)
French “vaudeville”
- These were called stage show
during the Japanese
occupation and later variety
shows
- it was developed because city
growers wanted to uplift their
emotional stability from the
usual stage acts
- Bodabil formed musical trends
& musicians; performers; and
performance genres
- The entertainers helped to
make jazz and blues popular
and admired in our country.

Okay. That’s all! Is everything *silence*
