ABSTRACT

Automated fault detection in human organs is gaining popularity because of fast

and surprisingly accurate results. Brain tumor can be detected by finding out
growth of abnormal tissues from MRI images. The traditional method for
detection is by human inspection. This method becomes inefficient for loads of
data. Although nothing can replace a certified doctor’s diagnosis for the problem
but surely a automated system build with robust machine learning and deep
learning algorithms can provide a helping hand in the diagnosis. In this paper,
brain tumor is detected considering MRI images using Artificial Neural
Networks.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I have great pleasure in presenting the report on Brain tumor detection using
Artificial neural networks. I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks
towards my guide Prof. Sachin Gavhane for providing the technical guidelines
and the suggestions regarding line of this work. I would like to express my
gratitude towards her constant encouragement, support and guidance throughout
the development of the project.

I am grateful to Dr. S. P. Kallurkar (Principal), Prof. Nileema Pathak (HOD,

Information Technology Engineering), without their support and advice our
project would not have shaped up as it has.

I wish to express my deep gratitude towards all my colleagues at ACE, Mumbai

for their encouragement.

1. INTRODUCTION
Sometimes brain cells lose their capacity of growing normally and start growing
abnormally leading to tumor. A brain tumor is a collection, or mass, of abnormal
cells in your brain. The tumors can be benign or malignant. Malignant
tumorsare cancerous while benign tumors are not cancerous. Brain images can be
obtained from x-rays, CT-scans and MRI’s , MRI image begin the most efficient
compared to other techniques in terms of image quality. These images are fed to
our modal which classifies weather it contains tumor or not using supervised
techniques like artificial neural networks, k-nearest neighbours (k-NN), support
vector machine, and unsupervised techniques like self-organization map (SOM),
fuzzy c-means when combined with feature extraction techniques. In this paper, an
efficient automated classification technique for brain MRI is proposed using
Artificial Neural Networks.
2. PROBLEM STATEMENT

To develop an algorithm that segments tumor sub-regions from MRI images and
train the model with several number of abnormal MRIs of brain tumor which can
give the result within fraction of time using Artificial neural networks and back
propagation.
3. AIM &OBJECTIVES

AIM: To implement a model that Detects brain tumor from MRI’s using Artificial
Neural Networks.

OBJECTIVES: Our main objective of Tumor detection model is to extract

meaningful and accurate information from MRI images of brain with least error
possible and finally conclude whether it’s a tumor image or not.
4. SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

The proposed model can be used for:

1) Pre-processing MRI images

2) Detect brain tumor from MRI images

5. LITERATURE SURVEY

1) Title: Brain Tumor Detection by using Artificial Neural Networks.

Authors : Hussna Elnoor Mohammed Abdalla
Approach : In this paper brain tumor is detected with artificial nural network
approach ,also preprocessing is done on MRI images to enhance its quality.
Publication:IEEE.

Brain Tumor inMRI.
Authors: Sneha Khare, Neelesh Gupta, Vibhanshu Srivastava
Approach:The following paperproposes a algorithm for the detection of brain tumor usingMRI.
The proposed method is implemented using OptimizationTechnique, Machine Learning
and Curve Fitting Techniques to detect tumor. The proposed method proves to be efficient,
16.39% accurate and 9.53% precised then the existing work.

3) Title: Detection and Classification of HGG and LGG Brain Tumor Using Machine Learning
Authors: P. Polly, S. K. Shil, M. A. Hossain, Ayman,Y. M. Jang
Approach:In this paper, they have proposed acomputerized system to differentiate between
Normal brain and abnormal brain with tumor in the MRI imagesand also further classify the
abnormal brain tumors intoHGG or LGG tumors. It classifies the abnormalbrain tumors in
the LGG and HGG after the extraction and reduction of the features.

⚫ Intel i3 processor
⚫ 4 GB RAM

7.2.Software Requirement

⚫ C language

⚫ Windows/Linux OS
8. FUTURE SCOPE

The future implications of this model could be further classifying brain tumors
into categories like Chordoma, CNS Lymphoma, Craniopharyngioma.etc
09. CONCLUSION

The identification and detection of brain tumor in MRI image is a tedious and
time-consuming task. But using image processing we can pre-process the MRI
images to remove noise and using ML/DL techniques it is possible to train our
model to detect brain tumor from MRI images in very early stages so that proper
treatment can be adopted and the chances of survival of a tumor-infected patient can
be increased significantly.
