Duoc UC ENGLISH PROGRAM

This Practice for the TOEIC BRIDGE™ Test is a collaboration between Oxford University Press and
DuocUC. It is designed to integrate TOEIC BRIDGE™ Test practice into all levels of the DuocUC English
Program.

About the DuocUC English Program

Led by TEFL-certified instructors, the DuocUC English program emphasizes development of all four
language skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) via a communicative approach carried out in
small groups. The Program offers students the opportunity to improve their English language skills as a
work-force competency, while systematically preparing for the TOEIC BRIDGE™ Test.

About the TOEIC BRIDGE™ Test

The TOEIC BRIDGE™ Test is the ideal starting point on the path to workplace success for English
language learners. It measures the listening and reading comprehension skills used in an international
environment. Universities, corporations and government agencies worldwide use the TOEIC BRIDGE™
Test to assess English-language proficiency. It is composed of 100 multiple-choice questions and is
divided into two sections: Listening and Reading. There are 50 questions in each section. The test itself
takes 60 minutes.

In addition to being an internationally-recognized benchmark examination, the TOEIC BRIDGE™ Test is

used by DuocUC to measure individual progress and to provide access to an internationally-recognized
certificate for all participants.

This Practice for the TOEIC BRIDGE™ Test section for American English File provides contextualized
review of specific TOEIC BRIDGE™ skills for each File. Opportunities to practice all skills are covered
within this section. The complete TOEIC BRIDGE™ Test has the following parts:

Listening
Part I: Photographs (15 questions)
Part II: Question-Response (20 questions)
Part III: Short Conversations and Short Talks (15 questions)

Reading
Part IV: Incomplete Sentences (30 questions)
Part V: Reading Comprehension (20 questions)

We hope this material enhances TOEIC BRIDGE™ Test performance.

Good luck!

Questions 1–3 refer to the following email message.

To:  Hiro Takashi
Sent:  Tuesday, 6:00 p.m.
Subject: Hi!

Hi Hiro,

It’s nice to meet you on email! I’m excited for our first day of classes and that you’ll
be my new roommate. I thought we could get to know each other before we meet
on September 1st. I’m from Brooklyn, New York. I live in an apartment with my
parents and my younger sister. I like to watch sports and play basketball during
my free time. I don’t really listen to a lot of music, but I do like to listen to classical
music when I study. I’m a neat person, and I clean about twice a week. I’m sending
a photo attachment of myself. As you can see, I have curly red hair and brown eyes.
I’m tall and slim. People say I’m funny, but I think I’m just friendly. What are you
like? What do you look like? What do you like to do in your free time? Write back
soon!

Best,

Richard

To:  Students
Sent:  Monday, 1:00 p.m.
Subject:  important message

Dear Students,

We realize the next few weeks will be stressful for many of you with exams and
projects. The weather is also extremely cold and that won’t help with your mood
or health. Students say they feel depressed during this time of year, so we want to
remind you that there are few things you can do to avoid this and to stay healthy.
Sunlight is really important. Not only can it make you feel happier, but it helps
make your bones stronger and immune system healthier. There isn’t much sunlight
outside, so make sure you take a short walk during the day. If you can, step away
from your computer screen. After every hour, take a five or ten minute break. This
will help your eyes. Try to drink eight glasses of water a day, and make sure you eat
your fruits and vegetables. It’s important to eat healthy to stay healthy! Also, if you
have any questions please stop by Student Health Services!

Sincerely,

Student Health Services
