Lesson Plan

Development and Theme of a Story

Curriculum framework content name: Grade 9-10

Curriculum framework content number: RL.9-10.3
Curriculum framework content description: Analyze how complex characters develop over
the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.

Learning Objective
1. Students will be able to find theme in a book/story
2. Students will be able to back up the theme with textual evidence
3. Students will be able to understand character development
4. Students will be able to recall the plots evolution towards the theme

Learning Activities:
Individually, the students will watch the TeacherTube video about finding theme in a
narrative (https://www.teachertube.com/video/theme-by-roomrecesscom-488069).This link
will be online for them to find in their emails sent from me. The video is about finding theme
with textual evidence and paying attention to character actions and development because as
the video states it will not just tell you the theme. They will watch the video in full first then
fill out the graphic organizer that relate to the video and the current class reading. The student
may then go back after watching it in full to fill out the information. These questions are
designed to answer what the learning objective is wanting them to comprehend. After about
fifteen minutes of filling out the graphic organizer I want to discuss their opinions on what
they think the theme is with other student in a group. Then we will discuss the content as a
class.

Assessment/Evaluation:
The students will be evaluated on their completion of the graphic organizer. Meaning
the organizer will need to be complete with appropriate answers in the correct boxes. Then I
will evaluate their ability to discuss the information in their groups. Who talked? Gave
information or examples? Class discussion will be evaluated over the course of time. Each
student needs to talk once over a week or two weeks.
