Standard Method of Test for Effect of Heat and Air on a Moving Film of Asphalt (Rolling Thin-Film Oven Test) AASHTO Designation: T 240-03" ASTM Designation: D 2872-97 ily ( 7 SCOPE 1 “This testis se to measure the effet of hes and ai on a moving fm of semi-solid asphalic materials, The effects of this treatment are determined from measurements of the properties of the asphalt before and after the test. 12. ‘The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard, 13. This standard may invotve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It isthe responsibilty of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to se. 2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS 24 AASHTO Standards: mR 16, Regulatory Information for Chemicals Used in AASHTO Tests _ T51, Ductility of Bituminous Materials 1-202, Viscosity of Asphalts by Vacuum Capillary Viscometer 22. ASTM Standard EL, Specification for ASTM Thermometers 3. SUMMARY OF TEST METHOD ad. A moving film of asphaltic material is heated in an oven for 85 minutes at 163°C (325°F). The cffects of heat and air are determined from changes in physical test values as measured before and after the oven treatment. An optional procedure is provided for determining the change in sample 32. Precision values for this test method have been developed for viscosity at 60°C (140°F), and ductility at 15.6°C (60°F). TS-25 T2401 ‘AASHTO 5.1.2. TS-2b SIGNIFICANCE AND USE This method indicates approximate change in properties of asphalt during conventional hot-mixing at about 150°C (302°F) as indicated by viscosity and other rheological measurements. It yields a residue which approximates the asphalt condition as incorporated in the pavement. If the mixing tomperature differs appreciably from the 150°C (302°F) level, more or less effect on properties will occur. This method can also be used to determine mass change, which is a measure of asphalt volatility APPARATUS Oven —This shall be a double-walled electrically heated convection type. Its inside dimensions ate height 381 mm (15 in.), width 483 mm (19 in.), and depth (with door closed) 445 = 13 mm_ (27'/, “in. The door shall contain a symmetrically located window with dimensions of 305 ‘min (12 in.) to 330 mm (13 in.) wide by 203 mm (8 in.) to 229 mm (9 in.) high. The window shall contain two sheets of heat resistant glass separated by an air space. The window should permit an unobstructed view ofthe interior ofthe oven. The heating element shall be located below the oven floor and shall be adequate to maintain the required temperature, The oven shall be vented tap and bottom. The bottom vents shall be located symmetrically to supply incoming air around the ‘heating elements. They shall have an open area of 15.0 0.7 cm (2.31 0.11 in). The top vents shall be symmetrically arranged in the upper part ofthe oven and have an open area of 9.30.45 cem? (1.45 + 0.07 in?) The oven shall have an air plenum covering the side walls and ceiling, the air space being 38 mm (1'f im) deep from the walls and ceiling. Ata midpoint inthe width ofthe oven end 152 mm in.) ftom the face of the citcular metal carriage to its axis, a squirrel eage-type fan 133.4 mm (G'/ in.) O.D+ by 73 mam (2 in.) wide shall be turned at 1725 R’min by an externally mounted rotor, The squirrel cage fan shal be set so thatthe fan tums in an opposite direction to its vanes, ‘The air flow characteristics ofthe fan-plenum system shall be suetioned from the floor of the oven through the wall plenums and exiting ofthe air through the fan. Figures | and 2 show details of this plenum-system. ‘The oven shall be equipped with «proportional control thermostat capable of maintaining 163°C (625°F) temperature within +1.0°C (£1.8°F). The sensing element of the thermostat shall be placed approximately 25mm (1 in.) fiom the left side and approximately 38mm (1'/3 in.) from the ceiling of the interior of the plenum-enclosed oven so that the end of the sensing element is at a point approximately 203mm (8 in.) from the rear interior wal of the oven. The thermometer shall ‘be hung from or affixed to a mounting in the ceiling which is S1 mm (2 in.) from the right side of the oven at a midpoint in the depth of the oven so that the bulb ofthe thermometer is within 25 mm (1 in.) of an imaginary line level to the shaft of the circular metal carriage. The heating Controls shall be capable of bringing the fully loaded oven back to the test temperature within 2 10-minute period after insertion of the samples in a preheated oven. ‘The oven shall be provided with a 305 mm (12 in.) diameter vertical circular carriage—see Figure 2 for details. This carriage shall be provided with suitable openings and clips for firmly holding cight glass containers —sce Figure 3—in a horizontal position. The vertical carriage shall be ‘mechanically driven through a 19 mm (‘ in.) diameter shaft at a speed of 15 0.2 R/min, ‘The oven shall be equipped with an air jet positioned to blow heated air into each bottle at its lowest point of travel. The air jet shall have an outlet orifice 1.02 mrn (0.04 in.) in diameter (No, 60 drill) connected to a 7.6 m (25 ft) length of 7.9 mm (*/,¢ in.) O.D. refrigeration copper ‘tubing, This tubing shall be coiled to lie flat on the bottom of the oven and lead to a source of fresh-dried, dust-free regulated air. 7240-2 ‘AASHTO —— a i é i fe =e | i an Motor 125RPM | ie \ “op View Fan af Direction of Rotation Vent f J Figure 1—Schematic of Air Flow Front View = aE OO} | we (O+-O} TS-26 240-3 ‘AASHTO,
