Scale Drawings/Models & Scale Factor (SOL 7.6)

• Scale: The relationship between the measurements on a drawing or model and the measurements of
the real object.

• Scale drawings: represent something that is too large or too small to be drawn at actual size.

• Distances on a scale drawing or model are proportional to the real-life distances they represent.

A map is an example of a scale drawing!

The ____________ is the ratio of a

given length on a drawing or model
to its corresponding actual length.

• We can use the scale on a map to find out the _______________ distance between cities and
landmarks. To do this, we need to write and solve a _____________________________.

Example 1: On a map of Florida, the distance between Coral Springs and Fort Lauderdale is about 4.1
centimeters. The scale on the map is 1 centimeter = 4.5 kilometers. What is the actual distance?

1
Example 2: On a map of North Carolina, the distance between Raleigh and Charlotte is 3 inches.
4
The scale on the map is 1 inch = 40 miles. What is the actual distance?

3
Example 3: On a map of Texas, the distance between Houston and Austin is 2 inches. The scale on
4
the map is 1 inch = 50 miles. What is the actual distance between Houston and Austin?
• BLUEPRINT: another example of a scale drawing!

Example 4: On the blueprint of the pool, each grid square has a side length of 0.25 inch.
What is the actual width of the pool?

Scale
0.25 in. = 2 ft.

Example 5: A designer has made a scale Example 6: Inside the Lincoln Memorial, the

• Scale Factor: The ratio of a length on a scale drawing or model to the corresponding length on
the real object.
To find the scale factor for scale drawings and models:
1) Write the scale as a ratio, showing the scale length to the actual length;
2) Change the lengths to the same unit of measurement and then drop it;
(It is typically easier to convert the bigger unit to the smaller unit; ft. to in.)
3) SIMPLIFY!

a) Suppose a scale model has a scale of 2 inches = 3 feet. What is the scale factor?

b) Suppose the scale is 2 inches = 4 yards. What is the scale factor?

Try It! 1
Refer to the blueprint of the garden shown below. Each square has a side length of inch.
4

1) What is the length of the garden in this blueprint?

2) What is the actual length of this garden?

1’’ = 4 feet

1
3) The butterfly bush and the water fountain are 1 inches apart on the blueprint. Find the actual distance.
4

• Scale Models: three-dimensional replicas of an actual structure. The lengths, widths, and
heights on a scale model are proportional to the actual distances on the actual structure.

For Exercises 1–3, use the following information.

The local school district has made a scale model of the campus of Engels Middle School including a proposed
new building. The scale of the model is 1 inch = 3 feet.

1. An existing gymnasium is 8 inches tall in the

model. How tall is the actual gymnasium?

2. The new building is 22.5 inches from the

gymnasium in the model. What will be the actual
distance from the gymnasium to the new building if
it is built?

3. What is the scale factor of the model?

Yoshi made a scale drawing of his yard. The scale of the drawing is 1 centimeter = 0.5 meter.

1. The length of the patio is 4.5 centimeters in the drawing. Find the actual length.

2. The actual distance between the water faucet and the pear tree is 11.2 meters. Find the corresponding
distance on the drawing.

3. Find the scale factor for the drawing.
