Lesson Idea Name: Life Cycles

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd

Content Standard Addressed:

S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life cycles of different living organisms.
d. Develop models to illustrate the unique and diverse life cycles of organisms other than humans.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3-Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool: Discovery Education

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☒ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Discovery Education supports UDL in the following ways:
• Contains Multimedia
• Provides tasks that allow for active participation, exploration, and experimentation.
• Varies the display of information in a flexible format.
• Audio and visual components support auditory and visual learners.
Lesson idea implementation:
The teacher will provide the students with a video on “Plant Life Cycle” as a hook for the lesson. This video
is located on Discovery Education. The teacher will ask the students to write down one thing they learned
from the video. The students will also write down the 5 stages of the life cycle. The students will record this
on the Discovery Education board.
The teacher will tell the students that they are going to conduct an experiment by planting a bean in a bag
and watching it grow. The students will observe the growth of the bean and collect data. The students will
also make predictions and upload pictures of their bean plant. The students will record all of this data and
upload pictures to the Discovery Education board.
The students will need these materials:
• Ziplock bag
• Wet paper towel
• Bean seeds
• Tape
The students will wet the paper towel and fit it into the Ziplock bag. They will then place the seeds on top
of the paper towel. Next, the students will close the Ziplock bag and tape it to the window in the
classroom.

Reflective Practice: The activities that I created in this lesson impact student learning. The students are
conducting an experiment and collecting data. This activity keeps students engaged in the lesson. To extend
the lesson to a higher LoTi level, students can develop a model to illustrate the life cycle of other plants. The
students can choose to present their model any way they would like.
