AdDU brings down PWC in three, wins back-to-back 2nd runner-up title

By: Jerry Louise L. Huerbana

Banking on nerve-wrecking wallops, cracking spikes and tricky placing, Ateneo de

Davao University (AdDU) Lady Blue Knights clinched its back-to-back 2nd runner-up title
after foiling Philippine Women’s College of Davao (PWC) Lady Patriots, 25-14, 25-11, 25-
23, in this year’s Davao Association of Catholic Schools (DACS) women’s volleyball
tournament at St. Mary’s College of Tagum, last September 28.

AdDU entered the semi-finals with one loss after they were wounded by Holy Cross
of Davao College (HCDC) in the first-round match.

However, AdDU survived the onslaught and defeated consecutively St. Peter
College of Toril and St. John Paul College of Davao in their campaign for the finals.

The tide turned back to AdDU’s favor as Cor Jesu College (CJC) grabbed a hard-
fought win, securing a slot to the championships.

Like a roller coaster encounter, AdDU managed to come out strong and jumped to
a straight three-set win against PWC, leaving them as the 2nd runner-up of the
tournament.

AdDU established a good early work led by team captain Sam Dizon who propelled
four consecutive bullet jump serves that helped them draw the first blood, 25-14.

PWC team captain Nina Te tried to bounce back but was stopped by Elisha Bird
and Alyssa Mendiola’s thorny blocks that posted a 25-11 second set victory.

Unwilling to give-up, PWC retaliated with a one-point lead, 22-21, at the crucial last
part of the third set.

Crowd is on its peak as both teams traded deadly spikes and attacks that kept a
tight and close set.

Sensing a sudden death, AdDU poured their expertise as high leaping and
smashing Dizon splashed over powering attacks that shattered PWC’s defense.

Dizon and Alagao closed down the game with a a combined cozing kill from the
wings that paved their way to a back-to-back 2nd runner-up title.

“Masaya kaming lahat! Kasi last year, third din kami. At least na-maintain at hindi
nagbaba yung standing namin,” Shane Alagao, AdDU head coach, said in an interview.

Dizon expressed her sincerest gratitude to everyone who supported the team
along the way.

“Sa lahat ng sumuporta, thank you kasi nandiyan kayo always for us. Thank you
kasi hindi kayo nagsawang magsupport sa amin. I hope we made you proud,” she said.

AdDU will be back with their training next week as they will face another battle in
Mindanao Peace Games this October.
