Fives Pillard equipment for tunnels

Main key points.

The experience of Fives Pillard in combustion and their mastery in the analysis sector has led the
company to develop measuring equipment for tunnels over the past 30 years.

We follow the same logic systems as equivalent certified products and are in conformity with
current norms (SIL3).

For gas detectors for example, we have procured a company which is specialized in gas calibration
and metrology (Cofraq cylinders).

The measuring instruments used for calibration of gas detectors are Cofraq calibrated.

The experience of Fives Pillard with electrochemical cells is historical. For the past 30 years, we
have used electrochemical cells:
- In our combustion activities for monitoring combustion with the help of portable analyzers
- In our tunnel activity over the past 10 years (CO, NO, NO2) for monitoring pollution. These
products are used on most of our installations and always with success.

The Fives Pillard solution is to use autonomous equipment which is dedicated to taking a single
measure.

In terms of safety, it is not feasible for us to take the risk in tunnels of losing several
measurements.

Our products are made of SS316 steel as standard (robust, does not age over time and without
rusting).
Fives Pillard Opacimeter – OPASTOP GP3050ST.

Five Pillard is the forerunner for the principle whereby light is

diffused, in order to measure opacity and dust (1970 for the
Opastops fitted at the stack and 1980 for their use in tunnels).

We use the principle of the light reflection from the suspended

particles in air, which is a completely different technique and
much more efficient for low level dust concentrations (even
with a slight increase in dust levels, our equipment will deliver a
large signal. This is impossible for equipment using the
absorption principle, since it requires a high dust concentration
to obtain a sizeable signal).

All our instruments are factory calibrated.

Installation is very quick and easy: Only a single mounting point is required and there is no need
for alignment or adjustments.

The unit is fitted with a system for detecting any fouling of the optics, and also an automatic
correction and a system for heating the sample to be measured (fog).

We have opted for a mobile circulation system.

It is essential that the reply time is as quick as possible and does not depend on the air speed in
the tunnel.

Our OPASTOP is also supplied in a single unit which does not require any alignment procedures –
the measuring takes place internally, the samples to be analyzed are drawn into the equipment
where they are heated to remove all traces of water, so there is no risk of perturbing the signal
because of fog. The opacity which the equipment signals, represents the real opacity in the tunnel.

Maintenance is generally once or twice per year maximum and takes around 20 minutes
maximum. Calibration inspection is once per year using one calibration unit which can be used for
all the installed OPASTOP in the tunnel.

2
Fives Pillard Anemometer - WINDCHECK.
The WINDCHECK ultrasound anemometer operates using the principle of sound propagation
through air. It has the advantage of having the emitter and receiver being together in a single unit.
We use transducers which switch from emitters to receivers which allows to measure the wind
speed and direction.

Our unit, being comprised of a single unit requires only to be placed on one side of the tunnel,
making the installation very quick and simple and with easy maintenance (once or twice per year
taking around 15 minutes using a hand-held remote). The equipment is supplied calibrated
(includes calibration certificate) and ready to operate without requiring any particular
adjustments.

Measuring precision for the WINDCHECK is +/- 0.1m/s it generates an analogue signal of 4-20mA
which corresponds to a range of -20m/s to +20m/s (12mA=0m/s). The fault signal data are also
managed by the analogue output, so it is not necessary to make any additional wiring for this.
Electrical supply is 24VDC.

Advantages:
- Low installation cost.
- No adjustments.
- Not a lot of cabling.
- No alignments.
- No complete closures of tunnels smaller appliances.
- No calibration.

3
Fives Pillard Gas Detector - NOCOSTOP.
We opted for a different type of approach, since it is better to separate the two measures, we
decided to use a different technology.

For gas measuring, we use an electrochemical cell(CO.NO or NO2) with just a single unit in which is
located the measuring cell and all the electronics.
One gas /box

The equipment is supplied ready to operate, factory calibrated (with certification) and gives a 4-
20mA signal. Electrical supply is 24V. Therefore, the risk of losing the signal due to an obstacle is
eliminated. The measuring range is 0-300 ppm and adjustable

Maintenance is generally once per year using a hand-held remote (the same as the one used for
the Anemometer) and takes around 15 minutes maximum. The measuring cell is replaced only
once every 3 years minimum.(Constructor guarantee 3 years).

Fives Pillard Smoke Detector - SMOKECHECK.
At the request of a client and in order to provide additional information for monitoring road
tunnels, Fives Pillard developed a smoke measurement system for tunnels in 2009, using laser
technology.

This device is positioned above the traffic on the arched ceiling or at the top of a support column
and can measure the amount of smoke even in unlit areas, over a length of 50 m.

It uses a low power laser, the beam is reflected on a reflector device.

It is insensitive to ambient light and provides an analog information for the amount of dust
between the laser and the reflector.

Connecting several devices in series over the entire works can draw a map of the dust & smoke
level throughout the tunnel in real time.

Protection is IP 65, its settings are made using a remote device.

A 4/20ma output gives an immediate view of the smoke rate in the measurement area.

There is no need to wait until a threshold is reached in order to trigger an alarm.

The response time of our equipment is very fast: less than one second.

No maintenance is required, except for cleaning the lens with a soft cloth during cleaning
operations.
