ANSWERS:
1. Michael was able to make such a good impression on faculty members and
students when he first started working at the college by his hard work, cheerfully
volunteers for committee work, contribute good ideas and demonstrates a positive
attitude.

2. When discussing course requirements, Michel’s colleague inserted some

nonsense phrases by saying. Michael nodded his head. His colleagues began
asking him to respond to what others said during discussions. The risk of having
nothing to say made him pay more attention. Faculty members thought they’d
solved the problem. They’d created a new one. Michael was so intent on listening
and responding, he soon had an opinion about everything. Even worse, his way of
expressing his opinion occasionally hurt people’s feelings.

3. Three listener skills would help Michael the most in improving his listening ability:
- Apply the Golden Listening Rule
- Ask WIIFM
- Take relevant notes

4. If I were the head of the Humanities Department, I would say to Michael that could
help him:
- Pay attention to other’s ideas
- Keep an open mind. Do not judge or mentally criticize what the colleagues is
telling him
- Let him know everyone want to the best result after the committee
- Try to feel others feeling

5. The dialect tensions:

- He didn’t pay attention to other’s telling. Something in his eyes said, “I’m not
really listening to you.” Because they thought he didn’t respect to them.
- Rather than confronting Michael, his colleagues began asking him to respond
to what others said during discussions. Even worse, his way of expressing his
opinion occasionally hurt people’s feelings. Michael soon realized that his
colleagues were less friendly. They stopped asking him to join committees or
after-work get-togethers. Because they felt he began hate them so he tried to
criticize them. They were afraid when talking somethings during the meeting
Michael attended.
