Homework 4

Problem 1
(a) What is the definition of enthalpy?
(b) What is the difference between steady state and equilibrium?
(c) Which of these are state functions: Heat, Pressure, Enthalpy, Temperature?
(d) Define “ideal gas”.

Problem 2
Assume a gas can be described by the following virial equation
pV
 1  Bp  cp 2
NRT
with B  2.9  10 ̶ 9 1/mole Pa and C = 2.1  10 ̶ 16 1/Pa mole2.
(a) Calculate the work required (for one mol at 370 K) to increase the pressure from 150
to 400 kpa.
(b) Calculate the volumes for the beginning and final state of part (a).
(c) Redo part (a) assuming an ideal gas.

Problem 3
Assume 1 kg of a fluid at 350 K and 100 kPa where the heat capacities are temperature
independent. Everything is done reversibly.
(a) is cooled under constant pressure to 300 K. What is ∆H (cp = 4.18 kJ/(kg K)?
(b) Assume the internal energy depends only on temperature and cv = 4.1 kJ/(kg K)?
What is ∆U for the process in (a)?
(c) What is Q, what is the relative ∆V, assuming an initial ρ(300) = 998 kg m ̶ 3.
