Military Courtesy and Discipline

Discipline
 Mental attitude and state of training which renders obedience & proper
conduct in all conditions
 Respect and loyalty too properly constituted authority
 Smartness of appearance and action
 Extension or manifestation to others
Courtesy
 Recognition of the responsibility and authority of a senior’s position
Salute – Most important form of military courtesy
– Raising right hand smartly until tip of forefinger touchers eyebrow or front
brim of the cap
When not to salute
1. While at work
2. Carrying articles or load making salute impractical
3. Standing at a horse or leading a horse
In case of doubt, salute
Reporting to an officer
 Indoors without arms – Uncover, knock, enter when told so, and half two
paces from the officer
 Indoors with arms – soldier remains covered

 Any lettering not allowed
 Blue side up or on the right
