Introduction
It is important to note that from 1605 to 1606, during the devastation of Osorio, the Villa
Mella road was used to establish a communication between Santo Domingo and Monte
Plata, as well as with Bayaguana. This was due to the fact that these populations became
the main means of production to supply the Santo Domingo market.
The road to Villa Mella was taken because it provided greater security for the
transportation of goods. Also during the Restoration War, it played a role of the first order,
when Dominicans such as Marcos Adón, Ramón Mella and others fought against Pedro
Santana, who was stationed in Guanuma.
In the year of 1888 President Ulises Heureaux issued a resolution in which he stated that
the population formed in the territory that today occupies Villa Mella was recognized as a
community legally constituted under the name of Común de Mella, in honor of patricio
Matías Ramón Mella .
However, Villa Mella had presumably received in 1785 the name of Sabana Grande del
Espiritu Santo, name that acquired by a legend that told that in the trunk of an orange
tree, specifically where currently is the detachment of the local police, appeared the image
of the Holy Spirit with some atabales, congos, canoes touching. Hence, the Holy Spirit is
worshiped and he has become the patron of Villa Mella.
Conclusion
San Felipe de Villa Mella or simply Villa Mella, is a municipality in Santo Domingo Norte,
Dominican Republic. Villa Mella is located north of the Isabela River, about 6 kilometers
(or 10 kilometers) north of downtown Santo Domingo, and is considered an additional
neighborhood of the capital. This sector is considered one of the economically stable
areas in the metropolitan area of Santo Domingo. It is also home to the musical
organization known as the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit of the Congos de Villa Mella,
recognized in 2001 by UNESCO.
