As I write my final Presidents report, I am reflecting on all that

our club has achieved over the past 12 months through the
wonderful work of our dedicated members and partners. My
sincere thanks to one and all for the amazing support that I

Tree Planting Challenge

Last year’s Rotary International President, Ian Riseley, challenged every Rotarian to plant at least one tree as a pro-
ject to build a more sustainable planet.
Hampton Rotary took up the challenge and organised a tree planting on the foreshore near Red Bluff. The exercise
was assisted by Citywide, the Bayside Council horticultural service providers.
We are again organising another tree planting morning in conjunction with Citywide and we invite you and your
friends to join us.
Details are as follows: -
When – Saturday, 6 July 2019.
Where - Car park B6 which is on the north side of Sandringham Football Oval. (Melway Map 76 F7).
Time - 10.00am to 12 noon.
There is no cost involved.
Please contact Geoff Tickner to advise of your numbers by 30 June so that sufficient trees and plants can be supplied
by Citywide.
Geoff’s contact details are –

years ago, David Greenall incidentally came across a
typewritten letter dated November 19, 1962, signed by his
father, John Gilbert Greenall, who died in 1988. In it he
writes with great detail about his landing on June 6, 1944
on Bernières-sur-Mer beach. 79-year-old David, and his
four brothers had been quite unaware of the role played
by their father on D-Day. "During his lifetime, he refused
to talk about it. At the mention of June 6, 1944, he would
just say tersely 'it was terrible,'" says David.
80 hours without sleep
When he arrived on the beach at Bernières, at 6:10 am,
Sergeant John Gilbert Greenall was part of the first wave.
With his comrades, he boe the heavy fire of the German
forces, positioned on the heights along the shore. A mem-
ber of No. 23 Beach Recovery section composed exclu-
sively of English fighters in support of the 3rd Canadian
Division, his role was to clear the beach of any damaged
vehicles, and then try to repair them in a safe place. For
80 hours, "without sleep", he evacuated one by one the
wrecks of tanks lying on the beach, an essential task for
the smooth sailing of D-Day operations still in progress.
He would later be called upon to intervene all along the
coast, in particular on the beaches of Courseulles-sur-Mer
and Graye-sur-Mer, until the Liberation of Caen. He who
had been enlisted at the beginning of the conflict in 1939,
would have to wait until the end of the war in 1945 to re-
turn home to Cheshire, in the north-west of England, after
having participated in the crossing. of the Rhine in March
1945.
Grateful to have “managed to survive”
Despite the post-traumatic stress, he suffered, like many
soldiers, he had to "rebuild" his life. It was in Australia,
where he emigrated in the 1950s, that he raised a family
and decided to continue his professional life "as an engi-
neer in a power station, and later as a journalist specialis-
ing in the rural affairs."

Right David, in the footsteps of his father, on one of

the landing beaches.
