DIABETES MELLITUS
A. Definitions
Diabetes is a long-standing or chronic disease and is characterized by high
blood sugar (doubled) or above normal values.
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease caused by inherited and/or acquired
deficiency in production of insulin by the pancreas, or by the ineffectiveness of the insulin
produced. Such a deficiency results in increased concentrations of glucose in the blood,
which in turn damage many of the body's systems, in particular the blood vessels and
nerves (WHO).
B. Type of Diabetes Mellitus
1) Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes, called insulin dependent, is characterized by reduced insulin
production by the pancreas.
2) Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is called non insulin dependent, which is characterized by the
production of insulin which is sufficient but is not used effectively by the body.
C. Causes of Diabetes
1) Pancreatic Dysfunction
2) Offspring
3) Viral Infection
4) Obesity
5) Poor Diet
6) Cigarettes And Alcohol
7) Excessive Stress
8) Lack Of Sleep
9) Lazy To Exercise
D. Prevention of Diabetes
1) Adjust the frequency and health menu.
2) Maintain ideal body weight.
3) Exercise regularly.
Physical acitivity must be increased by regular exercise, at least 150 minutes per
week, divided 3-4 times a week. Exercise can increase insulin resistance that occurs
in prediabetes patients, increase HDL levels (good cholesterol), and help achieve
ideal body weight. In addition to exercise, it is recommended that you be more active
during your daily activities, for example by choosing to use stairs from the elevator,
walking to the market by car, etc.
