FY2020 tenement museum content calendar

Theme Description

For July, the month of American Independence Day, the Museum will celebrate American service
July Military Service
members and their contributions, past and present, to the United States.

In August the Museum will focus on all things travel and fun related. Think about what makes for a great
August Travel & Leisure American holiday: travel, activities or just playing in the street like kids in the Lower East Side decades
ago!

September is back to school month at the Tenement Museum. To celebrate, we’ll focus on the crucial

role Education plays in making us all informed and engaged citizens.

To tie in with New York Fashion Week in October, the Museum will focus on fashion and the historical

role cloth and garment making has played in the development of the Lower East Side.

Finding your Political With the 2020 presidential election on the horizon, as well as the 2019 municipal elections, November will
November Voice be dedicated to the political process and how democracy formed and continues to form America.

It’s Christmas time! For many this means it is time for games with friends and family and for most kids it

means getting toys as presents! We’ll celebrate both activities during this month.

January is food month at the Tenement Museum. We’ll be celebrating our food programs and all things

immigrant food-related in the Lower East Side and beyond.

February is Black History Month and to celebrate, we'll be exploring the rich contributions of Black

Americans to the United States and to the American identity.

For Women’s History Month, we’ll once again be celebrating on key female change makers throughout

US history, as well as all the women of 97 & 103 Orchard Street.

April 2020 will be at the eve of our extensive preservation initiative of 97 Orchard, so this month we will
April Preservation explore all things related to the preservation of our historic buildings. Note: This will be important to help
prepare the public for the subsequent changes to the tour schedule in 97 Orchard.

Lower East Side History May is dedicated to the neighborhood the Tenement museum calls home. We will celebrate on the
May Month characters, the history and the tenement dwellers that made the neighborhood ‘America’s foyer’.

For LGBTQ history (Pride) month, the Tenement Museum will explore the intersection between immigrant

and LGBTQ identities.
